Screen Bites: Darkness Rising: The Return of Grimm and Getting Acquainted With Constantine

Have you missed me, Watchers? My apologies for the long absence. Other concerns kept me away from the column, and some of the shows we typically discuss here I am still behind on, but wanted to touch on a few. *Spoilers will abound, so do not read further if you have not seen the first two episodes of these series.

Grimm, Friday 9:00 EST, NBC
After the last season’s finale shocker, with Nick losing his Grimm powers/abilities and Renard shot, the show came back strong, picking up right where it left off. Read More »

Screen Bites: Something for Everyone: A Golden Age of Genre Television

Greetings, Watchers. The last few years have seen a resurgence in genre television, now providing fantasy/paranormal/science fiction fans with a number of different choices. Whether you want to follow stories about vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural beings, fantasy taking its stories from fairy and folk tales, or prefer post-apocalyptic/dystopian fare, it is very likely you will find numerous possibilities. Screen Bites: Saying Goodbye: Season and Series Finales of Genre Shows

Watchers, recently we have said goodbye to some of our favorite shows, whether just until they next return, or perhaps, sadly, for good. Several genre shows got cancelled this year, some leaving fans hanging without a clear and decisive ending. If we’re lucky, shows end by agreement, with a plan and a proper send-off by its loose ends being tied up, such as Being Human. Often, however, cliffhanger season finales end up being series finales since the showrunners don’t know the show’s fate at the time they are writing. Read More »

Screen Bites: Is Blood Thicker Than Water? Family, Friends, and Relationships on Lost Girl and Supernatural

Greetings, Watchers. *This time we will discuss Lost Girl, up through the episode “Waves” that aired on SyFy on 3/17 (the column will always follow the US viewing schedule) and Supernatural up through the “Blade Runners” episode which aired 3/18. New episodes of both shows may air before you see the column and comment, so please do not give any spoilers at all beyond the episodes I am writing about here.* Read More »

Screen Bites: You Wanted Them: Poll Results For the Column

Watchers, my apologies for the long absence. As you may recall, we did a poll here a while back asking which shows you would like to discuss in the column. Ninety-eight people voted. Of the five shows with the most votes, two (Sleepy Hollow and Witches of East End) have already finished their runs for the season. However, they will still get discussed (one this time, the other next). The other three rounding out the top five: Grimm, Lost Girl, and Supernatural, which we will talk about regularly. Read More »

Screen Bites: Zombies, Sin-eaters, and Angels, Oh My!

Watchers, this week we will discuss just a few shows, as I am still trying to catch up on my viewing, and later in the column I will be asking for your input.

Grimm, Friday, 9:00 EST, NBC
So, how have you liked the first two episodes of the new season? It was pretty much a given that Zombie Nick couldn’t stick around too long, which I imagine is one reason he didn’t end up in Europe. Also, by having him rampage through the Portland area there is more at stake if anyone recognizes him. Read More »

Screen Bites: Alive and Kicking: the Column Returns

Watchers, after a six-month (!) hiatus, I am back to discuss the shows we love. My apologies for the longer-than-expected absence, but other activities (good ones) kept me otherwise occupied.

I am still catching up on the current season’s slate of genre shows, so this week’s column will be for you to share what you have been watching, and whether you are enjoying the shows or don’t plan to continue with them. Read More »

Screen Bites: Shocking Surprises and Never a Dull Moment: the Last Few Weeks in Genre Television

Watchers, some wild and crazy stuff has been happening on our shows. Beware spoilers…

Game of Thrones, Sunday 9:00 EST, HBO

We have never discussed this show in the column before, primarily because I never got to see it in first run. This year, however, I am watching as the show airs, and am curious how many of you would like to discuss it. If you have not watched this season yet but do follow the show, you probably don’t want to read further.

Screen Bites: Things (and People) Fall Apart: Being Human, Lost Girl, Merlin, The Vampire Diaries, and Grimm

Greetings, Watchers. Lots has happened on our shows during the column’s hiatus, and this time we will be sorting through the events of just a few of our favorites. Reminder: in your comments/responses, please do not say anything about shows not under discussion in this particular column, or about episodes more recent than the ones discussed.

Screen Bites: Love Hurts: Messing With Hearts on Once Upon a Time, Grimm, and The Vampire Diaries

Watchers, please be aware that there will be spoilers here. If you are behind on a show, you should probably skip that section in the column.

Once Upon a Time, Sunday 8:00 EST, ABC

Back after a week off, the show picked up right where it left off (as it always does) with Aurora and Henry waking up in their respective places, trying to make those with them understand what they have just seen. Of course we know that when David/Charming volunteers for a sleeping curse that it will not end well. Read More »

Screen Bites: Sometimes What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You: Secrets on Once Upon a Time, Grimm, and The Vampire Diaries

Once Upon a Time, Sunday 8:00 EST, ABC

Watchers, I have conflicting feelings as I write this column, as I think the last two episodes were first a really high point (the giant story) and a low point (Ruby/Red’s story). The latter makes me very disappointed, as the initial Ruby/Red story from last season remains one of my favorites. In this last episode, it wasn’t the story itself that I felt was weak, but parts of the execution were poor, I thought. Some of the Storybrooke scenes I thought were a tad melodramatic. What did you think? I did find the depiction of the bond between Red and Snow very touching and heartfelt, however. Read More »

Screen Bites: Back in Full Force: Grimm, Once Upon a Time, and The Vampire Diaries

Watchers, I’m sorry to have been away so long. Between a trip, illness, and many other obligations, I got behind in viewing and writing. We will be catching up with three shows this week, discussing a few episodes of each.

Grimm, Friday 9:00 EST, NBC

A lot has happened on Grimm over the last few weeks. Hank has seen the trailer, and now even helps Nick with research. Juliet and Captain Renard are obsessed with each other due to the spell he used to wake her up from her Adalind-induced coma. Monroe has been running Rosalee’s shop while she’s out of town (Bree Turner was having her baby). We learned that Captain Renard’s mother was a hexenbeast. Read More »

Screen Bites: Endings, Beginnings, and Strange Developments: Lost Girl, Haven, and Warehouse 13

Lost Girl, SyFy

Thankfully, the rest of the “team” all lived through the big battle. However, it seems that a bit of the iffy power got left behind in Bo, which I’m sure will comprise quite a bit of the Season 3 storyline. Also, now that Dyson is “whole” again, and Lauren is free, I imagine we’ll be back to the love triangle in earnest. I’m not crazy about this idea, but if the show handles it well, I may come around. What do you think?

My favorite line from the finale: “Dude was like a fae Jerry Springer” (Kenzie talking about the Geruda). Read More »

Screen Bites: Mysteries, Faepocalypse, and Changing the Future: Grimm, Lost Girl, and Warehouse 13

Spoilers ahead…

Grimm, Friday 9:00 EST, NBC

Now Hank is in the Wesen loop, which had to happen at some point. It would have become too difficult for Nick to effectively do both of his jobs, which do bleed over into one another a lot, without Hank knowing the score. Are you glad he now knows? How do you think this will impact the show? Read More »

Screen Bites: Explosive Finales and Big Revelations: True Blood, Falling Skies, and Grimm

True Blood, HBO

Watchers, a few weeks ago I stated that I found this season less satisfying and kind of uneven, but I must say that my attitude changed with the last three episodes, though there were a few aspects of those that still disturbed me.

First, up until the very last episode, I wasn’t really convinced of Bill’s big conversion. Where did it come from? Can it be explained by the nest behavior Pam referred to? I must say, though, that it was nice to see Eric as the reasonable one of the two. Read More »
