They Make Us Laugh, and They Make Us Cry: Christmas on SyFy, Sadness on Supernatural and Once Upon a Time

Christmas in Eureka, Warehouse 13, and Haven
SyFy’s trio of Christmas shows hit just the right note, I think. As usual, Eureka served up a fun episode equally divided in its emphasis on characters and what they mean to one another paired with very cool special effects and ideas. Warehouse 13 was a take-off on It’s a Wonderful Life, the source story of which they also incorporated into the show, but at the end, it also reminded me of The Wizard of Oz. Did anyone else feel that way? Read More »

Questions, Questions, and More Questions: Fringe, Grimm, Once Upon a Time and The Secret Circle

Watchers, my apologies to you for my absence. I was involved in a local event that prevented me from watching the shows so I got behind. As a bonus, we will discuss two episodes of both Fringe and Grimm, as well as one each of Once Upon a Time and The Secret Circle.

Fringe, Friday 9:00 EST, Fox
Wow – lots has been going on in the last two episodes, but some of those events have raised a few more questions. The episode of 11-11 featured the time jumps occurring all around the Boston area, and at first Peter thought he was responsible, that his reappearance had triggered the phenomena. However, we discover that a man sought to continue his wife’s work on time travel in order to go back before she was struck with Alzheimer’s. Read More »

Battle of the Fairy Tale Shows, and Return of a Favorite: Once Upon a Time, Grimm, and Fringe

So, Watchers, now that both “Once Upon a Time” and “Grimm” have begun, those of us who love fairy tales and folklore either have two new shows to watch or can pick a favorite. Three episodes of “Once Upon a Time” have now aired, and two of “Grimm.”

Once Upon a Time, Sunday 8:00 EST, ABC
Last week’s episode gave us some background on the Evil Queen, and though it answered a few questions, it also created a few more. The Henry adoption headed up by Mr. Gold provides some food for thought, wouldn’t you say?

Screen Bites: Plots Thicken, and a New Show Debuts - The Secret Circle, Sanctuary, Supernatural, and Once Upon a Time

The Secret Circle, Thursday 9:00 EST, The CW
Nick’s brother, Jake, returns to Chance Harbor after having left under a cloud, so to speak, a couple of years earlier. We discover that not only can Jake serve as the sixth person to bind the circle, since he and Nick are blood, but also that he has some power of his own. We know he has some sort of connection to the woman, Simone, who has been trying to kill the witches, but until the end, we don’t really know what the tie is. Were you surprised to discover that Jake was a witch-hunter? It’s an interesting idea, anyway.

Screen Bites: Welcome Returns and Surprising Exits - Fringe, Supernatural, The Secret Circle, and Sanctuary

Fringe, Friday 9:00 EST, Fox
Well, Watchers, we were wondering how they would bring Peter back, and now we know. I must say I thought the method was pretty cool. How about you?

As far as the rest of the episode goes, I really enjoy what they have done with “our” world without Peter having been around, but I am curious as to why that would have affected Olivia and the others experimented on as kids not turning up with their strange abilities, yet, except for Cameron in this episode. Your thoughts?

Screen Bites: Surprises Abound - Grand Finales, An Exit, and Important Information

My apologies, Watchers, for running behind on coverage for a few shows. I was out of town when the Warehouse 13 season finale ended, and I wanted to be sure to cover that in addition to the other goodies.
As always, be aware that there will be major spoilers for the shows under discussion here, especially in the case of the two season finales covered. As a bonus, this week we will discuss two episodes of Fringe to get caught up.

When One Door Closes, Another Door Opens: Answers and More Questions on Fringe, Haven, Supernatural, and The Secret Circle

Fringe, Friday 9:00 EST, Fox
So, Watchers, what do you think of the cooperation between the two worlds? It was pretty surreal to see Olivia and Fauxlivia talking to each other, but I think the “working together to stave off destruction” idea will work really well. Of course, we want to see episodes in the alt-verse, too, right? At least then we get more Charlie.

Screen Bites: Did They Really Do That? Surprising Events on Haven, Torchwood, Eureka, and Warehouse 13

Haven, Friday 10:00 EST, SyFy (Brit)
Wendigos are roaming the woods of Haven, and they are hungry. Audrey and Nathan set out in search of the troubled person only to find the Rev and his not-so-merry band are there with killing on their minds. Guess who was with them — Duke. I think we knew Duke was playing the Rev in an attempt to get answers. He promises to tell Duke why it’s his destiny to save the town of Haven where his father failed so many years ago.
Audrey does warn Duke that some doors you kick open you can never close again.

Who’s Driving This Bus, Anyway? Memory, Possession, and Family Secrets on Haven, True Blood, Warehouse 13, and Eureka

Haven, Friday 10:00 EST, SyFy
Watchers, how creepy was this week’s opening scene with those kids singing and seemingly drowning another child? Of course we learned that the males of that particular family are afflicted with changing into water creatures when the troubles come to call. I found that whole storyline very intriguing. Kudos to the writers for continuing to come up with unusual and thought-provoking conditions and situations for the characters to deal with.

Teamwork Gets You Through: Haven, True Blood, Eureka, Warehouse 13, and Torchwood

*Watchers, please be careful about spoilers in your comments here, especially for episodes of shows not under discussion in the column for the week. Fantasy Television Gets Serious: Haven, Eureka, Warehouse 13, True Blood, and Torchwood

Haven, Friday 10:00 EST, SyFy
There were some strange and humorous moments on Haven this week. Among the troubled was a person with the ability to channel electricity making for some charged situations. Also, there was a family who had the ability to make everyone fawn over them. This was actually my favorite part. It was so cute and funny to see the normally stoic and angst-filled Nathan look at the mayor and his son with these goofy looks of admiration. He fell so completely under their spell. I think he smiled more in this episode than in the whole first season combined! Did you find this dorky Nathan cute?

The Mind Plays Tricks: True Blood, Haven, Torchwood, and Warehouse 13

True Blood, Sunday 9:00 EST, HBO
That was a pretty gripping first scene, with Tommy defending himself and the result. But really, what a terrible couple those parents were. It seems that this event will be the impetus to bring Sam and Tommy closer, but I doubt the relationship will go smoothly. Your thoughts?
The whole “evil baby” scenario is becoming something else altogether, and I really like where they are going with the storyline. We haven’t seen any ghosts yet.

Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Brave New Worlds: True Blood and Falling Skies

Greetings, Watchers. The return of the summer genre shows began in full-force Sunday night with the True Blood season premiere, though the SF Falling Skies and the fun Drop Dead Diva both returned last week.

True Blood, Sunday 9:00 EST, HBO
I will preface my remarks by saying that I have not read the fourth book yet, so I won’t be making any comparisons between the show and the book this week.

Wow – the show kicked off season 4 in style with a great episode. How about those fairies, huh? They are masters of illusion, for sure. Those effects were really well-done, I thought.
