Screen Bites: Back in Full Force: Grimm, Once Upon a Time, and The Vampire Diaries

Watchers, I’m sorry to have been away so long. Between a trip, illness, and many other obligations, I got behind in viewing and writing. We will be catching up with three shows this week, discussing a few episodes of each.

Grimm, Friday 9:00 EST, NBC

A lot has happened on Grimm over the last few weeks. Hank has seen the trailer, and now even helps Nick with research. Juliet and Captain Renard are obsessed with each other due to the spell he used to wake her up from her Adalind-induced coma. Monroe has been running Rosalee’s shop while she’s out of town (Bree Turner was having her baby). We learned that Captain Renard’s mother was a hexenbeast.

The most recent episode featured La Llarona, the ghost who murders children every Halloween in an attempt to resurrect her own that she murdered. Those were some pretty creepy ghost children shown at the end, weren’t they? Things were kind of left up in the air, but my guess is that she got away. What do you think?

I loved it that Monroe is so into Halloween. How about those decorations of his? I could have done without the big spiders, though.

My favorite line in the last episode: “If this is real, how do you ever sleep?” (Hank to Nick, while looking through the books).

I’m really enjoying this season so far, but I do hope the Juliet/Captain Renard thing gets resolved soon. I do like that we are getting bits and pieces of information about the royal situation, but I always want to know more.

What about you? How do you like the season so far? What are your favorite storylines? Least favorite?

Once Upon a Time, Sunday 8:00 EST, ABC

I don’t know about you, but I think this show is just as strong (if not more so) than it was last season. Aside from the cool new characters (Hook, Victor Frankenstein, Aurora, Mulan and Lancelot), every episode we learn more backstory to the various players but also about the magic underlying the kingdom. For me, what I appreciate most about the show is the way they manage to tie everything together — to loop events, people, and stories around and back again, and they make sense.

I thought it was pretty cool that there was the one spot that didn’t fall under the curse. Of course, it’s not so great for those Emma and Snow at this point, but the show is doing a good job of keeping the separation dramatic enough without going overboard.

A couple of episodes ago we learned that Rumpelstiltskin needed that particular curse to find his son. Now that’s a story I am waiting to hear more about, for sure, and I’m guessing it will become a major bit of the plot.

Have you enjoyed seeing the younger, pre-evil Regina? And it’s nice to have Charming rather than David, isn’t it?

What do you think of the new season? Who have been your favorite new characters? What story are you most intrigued by and anxious to learn more about?

The Vampire Diaries, Thursday 8:00 EST, The CW

This past summer I watched all of seasons two and three and half of season one in two months. I am a big fan now, and the show will make a regular appearance in the column.

One of my least favorite romance tropes is the love triangle. That said, this show actually has one that I feel is believable. What about you?

In the premiere, when Elena has become a vampire, she tells Stefan, “I can be with you forever, if I want.” I found that to be a very important point, one that I believe will play a major role in the upcoming season.

One of my favorite scenes so far is from the second episode, where Damon was talking to Alaric’s grave, and Alaric could hear him, though Damon didn’t know that.

Speaking of Alaric, he was one of my favorite characters. I’m still not sure how I feel about his storyline for the last part of Season 3, but at least the end was touching.

And now we have Phoebe Tonkin in the show, even if it’s only for a few episodes. I think she’s a great actress, and really liked her on The Secret Circle.

I must admit that I am a Damon fan. No apologies. However, I will also say that I like Stefan better this season than any of the others. Both evil and overly-broody Stefan I find disturbing and annoying, but this season he seems to be more of a balance.

Who are some of your favorite characters? How do you like the show so far this season?

Watchers, I am far behind on Haven and Supernatural, and believe it or not I have not watched any of Fringe yet. I plan to get caught up for the next column, which will appear in two weeks. After that I should be back on a weekly schedule.

Happy viewing!

  1. gant get enough of Grimm, like the storyline, but want Nick and Juilette together, like thats she helping them.

I love all the characters they are bringing on OUAT too, so fun

  2. whenb I went to NYC last wkdn, I saw the NBC store and was like “GRIMM” !!!!, it was funny

  3. I love Once Upon a Time!! Love the way they incorporate the fairy tales into the storyline too! Haven’t watched this week’s yet. Still on the DVR!!

  4. So enjoying this new season of Grimm. Hubby talked his sister into checking them out. Actually I like how Monroe took care of those bullying kids. First how he helped that little girl… and how the community knows and love him if y ou listen to the trick or treaters “Oh ti’s Monroe’s”

But yeah I want it resolved with the Captain and Juliet. I kinda like to have her aware of Nick’s life. Though I liked how she helped Nick with speaking spanish on the last one.

  5. Don’t feel bad. Crap happens. And I’ve only seen the first 2 eps of Fringe, myself.

    Grimm

I am so loving Grimm! I forgot what kind of wesen the cop from New Mexico was, but she was very cool looking. And I can never say it enough, I love Monroe! THose kids totally had it coming. Frankly I would have scared them sooner.

I hope the Captain Renard/Julia thing resolves sooner than later because he is creeping me out! Breaking in, staring at her in the shower, breaking photos. All uncool and creepy!

As for favorites, the first thing scene that comes to mind is when Monroe made the medicine to help the guy with the inner ear problem. And it turned into a problem the size of “11″. That was hilarious!

    Once Upon A Time

I agree this show is really staying strong! With the way it ended last season I was afraid it was going to fizzle out, but they are handling the pacing and storyline really well.

I’ve been very surprised at the Regina story. The one thing I thought was interesting and shocking was that Regina never thought she was like her mother. I also wish that they hadn’t killed off Lancelot. I would have liked to know more about him.

I get EW Magazine and I know some of the stories that they plan to tackle, so I ‘mreally looking forward to the rest of the season!

And yes, so glad to have Charming back instead of just David!

    • Rae, did you get the feeling there was a bit of a spark between Monroe and the visiting former cop? I wouldn’t be surprised if we see her again.

I’ve liked seeing how Regina used to be and it seems that she tried so hard not to be her mother that she ended up pretty much just like her.

  6. I’ve got to agree OUAT and Grimm are both awesome shows. And I so love that Hank is finally clued in on whats going on. Monroe is probably my fav character.
Did you see The Mockingbird Lane special?
What do you think about the 666 Park Avenue?

    • Lisa, I recorded Mockingbird Lane but haven’t had a chance to see it yet. I watched part of the first episode of 666 Park Avenue, and it seemed intriguing, but haven’t had the chance to go back to it yet.

  7. I love Grimm! Monroe’s house was fantastic and everything I would love to have!

  8. I too am Damon’s fan more than stefan’s, but I’ve also come to like Tyler and Jeremy a lot.

  9. Haven’t seen any but ONCE UPON A TIME (and it’s been a few months for that), but good to know that it’s compelling this season!

  10. I keep giving Grimm a chance but just not feeling it and STILL can’t get the channel to watch OUAT.

  11. Please don’t throw anything at me but I haven’t seen any of these in a LONG time. I’m so far behind on watching things I might as well give up. The only things I’ve kept up on are Face Off, by the way, the guy from Grimm was on one of the episodes where they had to design a creature that would fit into that “world”, and now the Walking Dead. So sorry I can’t leave a comment on these shows, maybe soon I can also catch up.

  12. don’t watch Grim and Im behind on VD, so skipped that part (just in case). I have to agree on OUAT. We (my little ones and I ) LOVE that show. I love how they are still introducing new characters. Can’t wait to see where it goes next.
