Screen Bites: You Wanted Them: Poll Results For the Column

Watchers, my apologies for the long absence. As you may recall, we did a poll here a while back asking which shows you would like to discuss in the column. Ninety-eight people voted. Of the five shows with the most votes, two (Sleepy Hollow and Witches of East End) have already finished their runs for the season. However, they will still get discussed (one this time, the other next). The other three rounding out the top five: Grimm, Lost Girl, and Supernatural, which we will talk about regularly. Read More »

Screen Bites: Zombies, Sin-eaters, and Angels, Oh My!

Watchers, this week we will discuss just a few shows, as I am still trying to catch up on my viewing, and later in the column I will be asking for your input.

Grimm, Friday, 9:00 EST, NBC
So, how have you liked the first two episodes of the new season? It was pretty much a given that Zombie Nick couldn’t stick around too long, which I imagine is one reason he didn’t end up in Europe. Also, by having him rampage through the Portland area there is more at stake if anyone recognizes him. Read More »

Screen Bites: Alive and Kicking: the Column Returns

Watchers, after a six-month (!) hiatus, I am back to discuss the shows we love. My apologies for the longer-than-expected absence, but other activities (good ones) kept me otherwise occupied.

I am still catching up on the current season’s slate of genre shows, so this week’s column will be for you to share what you have been watching, and whether you are enjoying the shows or don’t plan to continue with them. Read More »

Screen Bites: Shocking Surprises and Never a Dull Moment: the Last Few Weeks in Genre Television

Watchers, some wild and crazy stuff has been happening on our shows. Beware spoilers…

Game of Thrones, Sunday 9:00 EST, HBO

We have never discussed this show in the column before, primarily because I never got to see it in first run. This year, however, I am watching as the show airs, and am curious how many of you would like to discuss it. If you have not watched this season yet but do follow the show, you probably don’t want to read further.

Screen Bites: Things (and People) Fall Apart: Being Human, Lost Girl, Merlin, The Vampire Diaries, and Grimm

Greetings, Watchers. Lots has happened on our shows during the column’s hiatus, and this time we will be sorting through the events of just a few of our favorites. Reminder: in your comments/responses, please do not say anything about shows not under discussion in this particular column, or about episodes more recent than the ones discussed.

Battle Royale vs The Hunger Games. Brought to You by Off the Fang!

There’s been a bit of the kerfuffle on the interwebs (imagine that!) over The Hunger Games. It seems there is this awesomely gory book called Battle Royale (made into a movie the year before The Hunger Games was released in theatres).

Here’s the description of Battle Royale, per Amazon: In an alternative future Japan, junior high students are forced to fight to the death! Koushun Takami’s notorious high-octane thriller is based on an irresistible premise: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing. Winner and a Random Picture from Facebook! Brought to you by Off the Fang!

Okay kids, we’re in the middle of yet ANOTHER move (three in a year - yes, I’m clinically insane), so I’m going to make this short and sweet. Random.org chose commentor 21 for the free vampire e-book! That would be YOU, Cat S. Since I went over board on Black Friday, I’ll have to send it to you a week from tomorrow. Spend that time perusing the awesomeness available and make your choice wisely. It’ll be like Christmas!

On a completely random note: folks, we are SCREWED in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Tallahassee will be too busy crying in his Wheaties to help us out. :( The horror!! The horror!!

Screen Bites: Love Hurts: Messing With Hearts on Once Upon a Time, Grimm, and The Vampire Diaries

Watchers, please be aware that there will be spoilers here. If you are behind on a show, you should probably skip that section in the column.

Once Upon a Time, Sunday 8:00 EST, ABC

Back after a week off, the show picked up right where it left off (as it always does) with Aurora and Henry waking up in their respective places, trying to make those with them understand what they have just seen. Of course we know that when David/Charming volunteers for a sleeping curse that it will not end well. Read More »

Screen Bites: Sometimes What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You: Secrets on Once Upon a Time, Grimm, and The Vampire Diaries

Once Upon a Time, Sunday 8:00 EST, ABC

Watchers, I have conflicting feelings as I write this column, as I think the last two episodes were first a really high point (the giant story) and a low point (Ruby/Red’s story). The latter makes me very disappointed, as the initial Ruby/Red story from last season remains one of my favorites. In this last episode, it wasn’t the story itself that I felt was weak, but parts of the execution were poor, I thought. Some of the Storybrooke scenes I thought were a tad melodramatic. What did you think? I did find the depiction of the bond between Red and Snow very touching and heartfelt, however. Read More »

Seeking a Bloodthirsty Monster. Brought to you by Off the Fang!

The Internet is full of memes bemoaning the current state of vampires in fiction. Phrases like “real vampires don’t sparkle” and pictures of Antonio Banderas, Kiefer Sutherland, and the dude who plays Spike (I’m too lazy to Google his name, but our wonderful editor Carol has informed me it’s James Marsters and that he should be listed by name because he is the best. I called her blasphemous and have challenged her to a duel. Due to aforementioned laziness and my knack for cutting myself with sharp objects whilst wielding them, I am acquiescing and adding his name.) Read More »

Screen Bites: Back in Full Force: Grimm, Once Upon a Time, and The Vampire Diaries

Watchers, I’m sorry to have been away so long. Between a trip, illness, and many other obligations, I got behind in viewing and writing. We will be catching up with three shows this week, discussing a few episodes of each.

Grimm, Friday 9:00 EST, NBC

A lot has happened on Grimm over the last few weeks. Hank has seen the trailer, and now even helps Nick with research. Juliet and Captain Renard are obsessed with each other due to the spell he used to wake her up from her Adalind-induced coma. Monroe has been running Rosalee’s shop while she’s out of town (Bree Turner was having her baby). We learned that Captain Renard’s mother was a hexenbeast. Read More »

Where Did Off the Fang Go??

For a few weeks, I was doing really well in compiling an Off the Fang and poll for you all, and I want to apologize for my slacking. I’ve been hit – hard – by the Bundy Curse and am still trying to crawl out from under the airplane that crash landed in my life.

In lieu of an actual column this week, I’m pimping a convention happening next month. The official blurb is:
Emerald City Steampunk Expo is a three-day celebration of the Steampunk Culture. There will be three days of concerts, gaming, demonstrations, comedy, oddities, cosplay, LARPing, stage shows and more. Read More »

Screen Bites: Endings, Beginnings, and Strange Developments: Lost Girl, Haven, and Warehouse 13

Lost Girl, SyFy

Thankfully, the rest of the “team” all lived through the big battle. However, it seems that a bit of the iffy power got left behind in Bo, which I’m sure will comprise quite a bit of the Season 3 storyline. Also, now that Dyson is “whole” again, and Lauren is free, I imagine we’ll be back to the love triangle in earnest. I’m not crazy about this idea, but if the show handles it well, I may come around. What do you think?

My favorite line from the finale: “Dude was like a fae Jerry Springer” (Kenzie talking about the Geruda). Read More »
