Rebecca Yarros Interview

Author Rebecca Yarros Interview and $30.00 Amazon Gift Card Contest

Beyond What is Given (Flight & Glory) by Rebecca Yarros BBB: What secret talents do you have? (besides writing)

RY: I actually used to cake decorate before I started seriously writing. I love giant, tiered, fondant-covered cakes!

BBB: What is your biggest fear or phobia outside of the writing world?

RY: With a military husband, it’s always going to be a knock with dress blues at the door. Always.

BBB: Where is one place you want to visit that you haven’t been before?

RY: Bora Bora. I’m dying to try out one of those little houses on the water!

BBB: What is the biggest real life lie you’ve ever told?

RY: I told my kids that Daddy would be home next month, and that I was going to buy them a movie for family movie night. I came back with my husband on mid-tour from Afghanistan. It was a moment worth a thousand little lies!

BBB: Please tell us more about Beyond What is Given and the storyline that drives it.

RY: Beyond What is Given is about Lt. Grayson Masters, the pressures of striving to graduate at the top of his Apache class at flight school, and Samantha Fitzgerald, who moves in with him and his roommates after she’s been expelled from her university. It’s a love story with passion, emotion, and overwhelming odds. They’ve both made huge mistakes in their past that neither of them can seem to let go or forgive themselves for. Grayson’s got walls ten feet thick, and Sam has a sledgehammer, which makes sparks fly, and though falling in love is the last thing either of them can really afford…well, you can’t deny a chemistry that melts everything around you, no matter how hard you try.

It’s about overcoming your obstacles, both Grayson’s in flight school and Sam’s struggle to get back into college. It’s a story about finding family, forgiveness, and acceptance, taking accountability for your actions and falling in love with the last person you’d expect while taking a look at the mistakes you’ve made and asking yourself at what point do I tell myself it’s okay to be happy?

BBB: How many more books will there be in the Flight & Glory series?

RY: There’s one more contracted for Flight & Glory, HALLOWED GROUND will release in late January of 2016!

BBB: What sets the Flight & Glory series apart from other books in the same genre?

RY: It’s not a typical New Adult in that while it takes place while Sam is in and out of college, it weaves in the military and real-life emotion.

BBB: What types of characters can readers expect in your world?

RY: Flawed, strong-willed, intelligent, loyal women, and swoon-worthy men who are growing into alphas, strong enough to fight for the women they love while realistically conquering their own demons.

BBB: If you had a superpower, what would it be?

RY: I would love to be able to stop time. That way I’d be able to get everything I need to done, and when the clock starts again, I could still be 100% present with my kids…napping wouldn’t be bad either.

BBB: If you could have any accents from anywhere in the world, which ones would you choose?

RY: Scottish. Hands down. Maybe it’s a love of Braveheart, or simply that I think they sound absolutely badass.

BBB: What were you like as a child? Your favorite toy?

AR: I was always telling stories. Kid you not. I think my barbies had more drama than an episode of Scandal. I loved fiercely and got my feelings hurt easily, which hasn’t really changed as I’ve gotten older.

BBB: What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2015 and into 2016?

RY: We’re in the middle of trying to adopt our daughter, whom we’ve been fostering for two years, and we’re hoping that is settled in the next few months. Then it’s moving home to Colorado and writing! HALLOWED GROUND is out in January, and I have a new series that I can’t wait to tell you guys about! (But it’s under wraps for right now!)

Thank you so much for having me!!!!

About Rebecca Yarros

Author Bio:

Rebecca Yarros is a hopeless romantic and lover of all things chocolate, coffee, and Paleo. The author of the Flight & Glory series, she loves emotional, gripping stories that are more than they seem at first glance. She also adores hot romance, men in uniform, smart heroines, and is in heaven when they all meet up in one story.

When she’s not writing, she’s tying on hockey skates for her kids, or sneaking in some guitar time. She is madly in love with her army-aviator husband of fourteen years, and they’re currently stationed in Upstate NY with their gaggle of rambunctious kiddos and snoring English Bulldog, but she would always rather be home in Colorado.

  1. Is there anything you find particularly challenging when you write or in your writing?

  2. Who are some of your favourite authors?

  3. !. Larissa Ione’s Wraith Seminus will always be my #1 book boyfriend.
    2. Rachel Vincent’s Faythe Sanders would be the heroine.
    3. Guilty pleasure is large iced mochas with 4 shots of espresso ;).

How do you feel about flying? Do you pilot and do your heroines pilot?

    • Viki,
OOOOH, Iced Mochas. Yes. Just… yes.
As for flying, I honestly can’t stand it, lol! But my husband is an Apache helicopter pilot, so he walks me through it the whole process, but I still kind of hate it! And no heroines yet, but soon!

  4. Q) Who is your #1 book boyfriend? A) I would say, Joe Morelli from the Stephanie Plum series.
    Q) If you could be any heroine, who would you be? A) I would want to be Wonder Woman, I guess, a tough gal.
    Q) What is your guilty pleasure? A) Anything chocolate.

  5. I think the most challenging part of writing for me is balancing life with six kids and a military husband and a full-time writing career. I drink a TON of coffee!

  6. Who is your #1 book boyfriend?
Roarke from in Death series by J.D. Robb. Or Rolf Magnusson from Miranda’s Viking by Maggie Shayne. Or…If you could be any heroine, who would you be?
Polgara from books by David and Leigh Eddings. Who wouldn’t want to be able to do real magic?
    What is your guilty pleasure?
    Chocolate.

  7. Congratulations on the release of Beyond What Is Given! From the books you have written who is your favorite character? Was this character easy or difficult to write? Was this character based on someone you know?

    • I think my favorite character is Sam from Beyond What is Given. She’s a firecracker that has no filter. She’s flawed, and strong, and has made giant mistakes that she’s learning to be accountable for, but she knows her self-worth, which is so important to me in a heroine!

  8. Author questions

My #1 book boyfriend is Acheron from the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

There are so many great heroines in books, it is hard to pick just one. I think I would like to be Rachel Morgan from the Hollows series by Kim Harrison.

    Chocolate is my guilty pleasure.

  9. If you could only give ONE piece of advice to newbie authors and writers, what advice do you think is the most important one to give? One PRO to becoming an author? One CON to becoming an author?

    • Raonaid, I would say don’t give up. Ever. You will always get rejections. Agents, editors, bad reviews, you name it. But all it takes is ONE yes. Hone your craft, keep writing and get at it!

Pro: This is my dream job, and I can give our kids all the attention they need and work around my schedule.
Cons: It’s super stressful and sometimes reviews can get under your skin and sting. =)

  10. Who is your #1 book boyfriend?
—- I cry unfair! It’s difficult to choose just one: Daemon from Anne Bishop’s Black Jewel/Blood books. Deveraux Peltier from Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter/Were Hunter books

If you could be any heroine, who would you be?

Tamra from Mercedes Lackey’s Oath books. She is total badass!!

    What is your guilty pleasure?
    Books, anime, cheesecake…

    • Cheesecake! I love cheesecake. Tamra is awesome! But I’m always a Talia fan (Arrows series in that Valdemar collection!)

      • I am also a Vanyel fan. I would have mentioned him as a book boyfriend… but he wouldn’t give me the time of day. But he’s a sweetheart.

Talia is pretty cool but Tamra stole the show for me.

        • Ooooh. Vanyel is good, too! I bawled with that book!!!

          • I did too!!! Another tear-jerker book in that series is Brightly Burning (I own most of the series. Took me some years but I got them all. I even have a few signed thanks to some friends. I just missing the newest ones)

Have you listened to Mercedes Lackey’s Filk? Music that is made for these books? I bought two of the cds. But it’s neat to listen to “My Lady’s Eyes” and all the other songs mentioned in the books.

  11. Hi, Rebecca!

Welcome to Bitten by Books. Congratulations on your new release.

It is fantastic to have you with us today.

My question for you is; do you have a favorite book or series that you have written so far????

If so, which is it and why???

    • Hi Brandy! Thank you so much! Oooh. I think my favorite book so far is Full Measures, but it could be because it was my first, so it holds a really special place in my heart!

  12. Hello! I love Arrow too. Who is your favorite character?

    • Oliver is my favorite character. I love him big time. But Felicity is a close second! I know she’s not comic cannon, but I love the light atmosphere she brings to the show, and the nuances of Oliver’s character that she brings out!

  13. Do you have a favorite stand-alone novel?

  14. Who is your favorite Muppet and why?

  15. Do you have any current favorite shows or books?

  16. Do you enjoy watching hockey yourself, or just taking the kids to play? If you do, favorite team?

    • Our four boys play so much hockey that there’s not really enough time to watch it when they’re not on the ice, but when we do, we’re mostly college fans and are always rooting for the Colorado College Tigers!

  17. 1. Who is your #1 book boyfriend?
Malcolm Slain from Demon from the Dark by Kresley Cole, Sawyer from Head Over Heels by Jill Shalvis or Joe from At Peace by Kristen Ashley…or any of Kristen Ashley’s alpha men or Maya Banks KGI men lol

    2. If you could be any heroine, who would you be?
Belle from Beauty and the Beast…mainly because I want her library but hey she still gets her man so I’m ok with that

    3. What is your guilty pleasure?
anything chocolaty like mocha starbucks fraps to chocolate mint brownies :)

  18. I love Griff from Damon Suede’s HOT HEAD and Mai from Edmond Manning’s KING MAI (both m/m guys, so who knows what that says about me).

Aziza from RG Alexander’s Fireborne series is very cool, though her life is complex and I’m definitely not a submissive….

No guilty pleasures! If you like it, why not?

  19. What was your favorite book as a child? What is your favorite book as an adult?.

    3. Chocolate, chocolate and, did I mention, chocolate???

  24. What things inspired you for writing books ?

  26. is there an author you admire that you would love to meet? and mentor you

  27. Book boyfriend… Edward from Twilight
heroine I’d be… Bella to make love with Edward…lol
    Guilty pleasure…. reading

  28. If you decided to change your name, what would you call yourself?

    • Ooooh, I’ve never thought about it? When I was a kid, I wanted to name my first daughter Emerald (aren’t we glad that didn’t happen?) so perhaps it would be a fun name now? LOL!

  29. I read a lot, so I have too many Book BF to list. But most are KIKT WEARING SCOTS because they all seem to be raised on Scotland’s milk of honor, loyalty & have an inbred protective nature. Plus they are stubborn & hard headed & their women can wield their own sword back to.back with their KILT WEARING SCOT.
so a.have too many FAV heroine to count, but I love a GOOD GIRL who RELEASES HER SEXUAL.KRAKEN, a heroine who can a$$ kicking with or without help, LEAP THAN LOOK, stubborn & hard headed & a heroine who gives against her eras RULES!

My guilty pleasures are reading great romance with great tunes boasting my ears, while drinking Diet Pepsi & munching on Reeves Peanut Butter Cups. Also trying to to improve my baby ‘re view site.
