Author Kelly Moran Interview and Amazon Gift Card Contest

Ghost of You (Phantoms) by Kelly Moran BBB: Describe yourself with five adjectives.

KM: Organized. Stubborn. Crazy. Determined. Considerate.

BBB: What real-life science, pseudo-science, history, religion, or mythologies did you research for your book?

KM: This series, overall, required a lot of research. Each book in the Phantoms trilogy focused on a different type of haunting. For book 3 in particular, it centered around “dark” spirits. I researched Christian religion, paranormal research equipment, the region, Native American history, and watched relative TV programs such as Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, etc. Though, um…that last one was no hardship.

BBB: We all need a hero! Tell us about your protagonist(s)? Was there a real-life inspiration behind him or her?

KM: Ah, Cain! I was dying to write him! He is all alone in this world, being the sole survivor after his family was killed in a home invasion gone wrong when he was ten. As an adult, he joined the Phantoms crew to feel like a part of something. He’s alpha all the way, but has a laid back attitude. He’s very patient and takes care of those he loves. Now Sammy, the heroine, has a not so great history, too. Her mom was killed when Sammy was a teenager and the psychologist she was sent to for counseling attempted an unfathomable act. As a result, she doesn’t trust easily and her walls have walls. Despite their sad backgrounds, this was a fun enemies to lovers story with a lot of verbal foreplay. And, of course, ghosts!

BBB: What’s your funniest writing or author memory?

KM: Oh boy. I have a lot. I remember a few weeks ago, one of my sons caught me arguing out loud with a character over a plot point. I wear my crazy hat always.

BBB: Please tell us more about Ghost of You and the storyline that drives it.

KM: As I said above, all the Phantoms books kind of center around a different type of haunting. Book one (Ghost of a Promise) was a traditional haunting, Book two (Give Up the Ghost) had a doppelganger, and Book three (Ghost of You) has dark entities. Though part of a series, each book can be a stand alone. Ghost of You takes the Phantoms team to Sammy’s hometown in Nebraska to a rural farming community where a desecrated church and a scarred shell of a school are harboring evil. The history of the location is quite tragic, and the crew doesn’t really know what to make of it. It’s also very personal and forces Sammy and Cain in closer quarters, thus moving them slowly from hate to love.

BBB: How many more books will there be in the Phantoms series?

KM: The series was intended to be a trilogy, so Ghost of You will be the last book. Though, you never know.

BBB: What sets the Phantoms series apart from other books in the same genre?

KM: I think ghosts in particular are always an interesting draw. Perhaps it’s the unknown factor. Reality TV shows on the subject are quite popular and have a big following. Most other books in the sub-genre tend to focus on traditional hauntings with a private residence or tend to use a secret government agency as the investigative pull. Phantoms actually takes the television world into haunted locations, combining romance with supernatural. The Phantoms team also uses the best elements of their competitors and takes it a step further for explosive results.

BBB: What types of characters / creatures can readers expect in your world?

KM: I always like my characters raw and real, so you can expect that from them. They have flaws and a history and hopefully you’ll want to root for them. Throughout the series you can expect ghosts of all kinds, EVPs, dark energy, and spooky phenomenon.

BBB: While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?

KM: Gosh, yes. Creeped myself out a little, too. I tend to inadvertently put a tiny bit of myself in each character. Um..not telling which for whom, though. LOL.

BBB: What was the hardest part of writing Ghost of You?

KM: Because of Sammy and Cain’s past, plus the animosity between them, there was a fine line between love and hate. It was difficult translating onto the page why they were the way they were, and then realistically morphing that into more. This book had the evil presence as well, and I didn’t want this to play out like every other demonic story or come off as cliche. It was a challenge, and it took a few rewrites, but I think the readers will get a unique, enjoyable read out of it. If not, feel free to lie to me. (wink)

BBB: If your characters were shrunk and dropped into a glass, how would you get them out?

KM: Bwa ha ha! Hm. How would they get themselves out? I can easily see Cain and Sammy running back and forth, shoving at the sides and using momentum to tip the glass over. They’d fight beforehand and kiss like mad afterwards.

BBB: What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2015 and into the new year?

KM: Besides the Phantoms series, I have a contemporary series releasing this year called Covington Cove (Return to Me 3/3/15, All of Me 9/1/15). I just finished writing an erotic romance (which my agent has now) and I’m working on a new contemporary series about 3 sexy veterinarians in a small Oregon town.

  5. Krista Cubicleblindness

    Favorite Scary Movie?
Arachnophobia. Absolutely hate this movie, but watch it every year. Gives me nightmares every time

  6. 1. No, but I have had the creepy feeling.
    2. It’s paranormal romance for me and I don’t have a favorite trope.
    3. The Descent. It’s just too freaky scary.

What got you into ghosts/phantoms? Do you have a favorite author that writes ghost stories?

  7. Hi, Kelly!

Welcome to Bitten by Books. Congratulations on your new release.

It is fantastic to have you with us today.

My question for you is; do you have a favorite book or series that you have written so far????

If so, which is it and why???

  8. Hi Kelly and Congratulations! Your book sounds great! The Carolinas are so beautiful. I’ve never been to Wisconsin but I’d love to visit! Who is your all-time favorite book character?

  9. My answers:

    1. I’ve never really been in a ghostly or spooky situation but I have, I guess you’d say, had premonitions. You know, strong feelings about a person or place.

    2. The Shining because I really like the premise and Jack Nicholson is a very talented actor!

    3. Romantic suspense and soul mate/fate.

  10. Congratulations on the publication of Ghost of You! What was the most interesting thing you learned in your extensive research for the Phantoms trilogy?

    • Thank you! I think the research and digging into doppelgangers for book 2 was the most interesting and the angle I spent the most time researching. You don’t hear a lot about them and there’s so many theories about their existence. :)

  11. Author questions

I have never encountered a ghost, but I have visited the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. It is said to be haunted by the ghosts of people killed by the Winchester rifle.

My favorite scary movie is Halloween.

Paranormal romance is my favorite sub-genre of romance. Soulmates and the tortured hero are my favorite tropes.

  12. Hello! I love Once Upon a Time too. Who is your favorite character?

  13. Who is your favorite Muppet and why?

  14. To my knowledge, I haven’t encountered a ghost.

The only one I’ve finished is SHALLOW GRAVE…it’s not too gory, the dialogue is rat-a-tat clever, and I can never resist Ewan McGregor!

M/M is definitely my favorite, especially friends-to-lovers!

  15. Do you have any current favorite shows or books?

  16. 1. Have you ever encountered a ghost or spooky situation?
I’ve been to an old haunted farm and hear noises but I’ve never seen anything
    .
    2. What is your favorite scary movie and why?
Scream series and anything by Stephen King really lol

    3. What is your favorite sub-genre of romance and what is your favorite trope?
I love romantic suspense and paranormal romances and my favorite trope would have to be men in uniform with a tortured past and badass heroines who can heal them or just a nerdy guy turns into a hero for the heroine

  17. If you could have a pet unicorn or a dragon, which would you choose?

  18. When can we expect the sexy vets series? This one sounds fascinating, both OR base, sent I spent so much time there and have worked with animals large and small.

    • My BFF is a vet tech and is helping me so much while writing these! Book one is done and in the hands of my agent. Waiting to see if a publisher offers. Hopefully soon! I would suspect a 2016 release. :)

  19. What genre would you like to try writing in, but haven’t yet for whatever reason?

    • I’ll always stick with romance, but as for sub-genres, I’m thinking of trying my hand at a YA romance. There’s been a trope/idea in my head I’ve been playing with. YA is a hard market though and the author really has to nail the age correctly. Still thinking…LOL :)

  20. If you could only give ONE piece of advice to newbie authors and writers, what advice do you think is the most important one to give? One PRO to becoming an author? One CON to becoming an author?

    • I actually wrote an article on this over at Goodreads. Here’s the link: https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_posts/7292271-so-you-wanna-write
Asfor one piece of advice, I’d have to go with the cliche answer and say don’t give up. I started out Indie before it was popular, moved to small press, and then big 6. I’m hybrid now, doing a little of everything.
Pro=I’m doing what I love and shutting up the voices
Con=Bad reviews are hard sometimes and the bigger the pub, the more your author hands are tied.
      Still, love my job! :)

  21. 1. Have you ever encountered a ghost or spooky situation?
—- I have had experienced several spooky instances

I have been through a couple spooky instances at our previous apartment. The building had once belonged to the Greene family - the woman who captained the Delta Queen (or so we had been told when we moved in at the time) – and made into separate apartments…
The first: In one particular spot, the entryway between the living room and dining room smelled strongly of coffee. However, no one in our household drinks the stuff and we did not have any neighbors above us. Just that one place, we moved further into either room the scent disappeared.
The second is similar but another room, our bedroom. It was really odd, we scented a perfumy scent – the kind that little old ladies seem to favor… and it was in one place. Hubby found that incredibly weird.
The last freaked me out so much I had to have my toddler sleep with me for a month until I felt comfortable again. My husband worked nights, so it was only me and my three boys. I don’t know what woke me but I woke but couldn’t move. It felt like I was held down but I was aware. I freaked out so much.

    .
    2. What is your favorite scary movie and why?
—- I am not big into horror / scary movies. They play too much with my brain and imagination…

    3. What is your favorite sub-genre of romance and what is your favorite trope?
Fantasy-steampunk! Favorite trope. I do like the tortured hero/heroine….

  22. What book or books are you reading now?

No scary ghost encounters in my past

I don’t really like scary movies

    I like paranormal romance

  25. If money wasn’t something you needed to consider what would be your dream property to purchase ie I would love to get a place with land again but this time with a nice house as well

  26. If you found a genie, what would be your three wishes?

    • You guys have some great questions! Hm. Tough one. Probably unlimited money to ensure security. Health and happiness for my kids always. And the chance to talk to deceased loved ones one more time. :) xo

  27. whats been the hardest part emotionally of writting

    • Ah! A lot. As an author, more so than most professions, we put our hearts out there with every book for the world to see/read. Bad reviews kill us dead inside. I’ve always said not every reader takes the same thing away from every book. I can handle bad reviews pretty well. They’re a learning experience and I prefer honesty. But some are really tactless and hurtful, or very inaccurate of plot/characters/setting, etc. I think people forget sometimes that there’s a person behind the pages. :)

  28. 1. lived in a haunted mansion
    2. silence of the lamb because sir anthony hopkins is terrific
    3. friends to lovers and best friends little sister in contemp and historical

  29. hi KElly, what is the easier part of writing, otherthan finishing it, lol

    • Hm. I always found the plotting to be an easy task for me. When starting a new book, I plot out major points ahead of time. I also find writing the hero much easier than the heroine. LOL :)

  30. If you decided to change your name, what would you call yourself?

  31. If chocolate ceased to exist, what would be your next favorite food?

    • Gosh! No! Don’t say that! (shudders) LOL
Um, I love food honestly. Pie would be a next fave. I’m a sucker for rye toast, salad (I know, but really!), good pizza, and roast beef sandwiches. :)

  32. 1 - I’ve never encountered anything spooky except for haunted houses during Halloween.
2 - Nightmare on Elm Street
3 - Romantic comedy and time travel

  33. What is one question that you wish someone Would ask you about your writing ,that no one has?

  34. Are there going to be any more Phantoms books?

  35. Never encountered any ghosts but used to get scared by ghost stories around the campfire.

  36. I am not a big fan of scary movies

  37. Hi Kelly, when you get an idea - do you jot it down straight away?
I also love all your books, thanks for writing and giving us the pleasure of your books

  38. What is your favorite food?

  39. who is your favorite author?

  40. Wheres your favorite place to write?

  41. From any of your books, what has been one of your favorite scenes, or types of scenes, to write?

  42. congrats on your book. my question is where is your favorite vacation spot.

    Answers
    1. nope not yet. I’m still waiting.
    2. the bone collector and those type movies scare me worse that any monster movie ever could.
    3. I don’t have a favorite genre I read lots of them but tend more towards the paranormal or scifi

  43. Have you gone on any of the local (or Chicago) organized ghost tours?

    • I have! Before having kids, my friend and I used to visit different “haunted” locations every year in September, but it’s hard with the kids. We’ve done quite a few in the WI area.

  44. I have had several paranormal or unexplained encounters. I am sure we had a ghost cat living with us in one house. And there is an angry but ahrd working spirit in my barn. He shouts “get to work” around dusk.

Favorite sub genre would be historical romace, if you throw in time travel, even better.
    Someplace with a lyrical accent.

  45. I wasraised on ghostie stories by my mom. She loved all things UNEXPLAINABLE! When I was 14, she died & to this day when I am devastated (like when my sister was murdered), I feel her hands on my should giving me her special motherly warmth. Now I have my mom’s hand on 1 shoulder & my sister on the other.

Nightmare n Elm Street & Annabel.

I love historical romance combined with paranormal mixes in.

Are you a Coke or Pepesi person?

  46. Have you ever written a Mary Sue character?

    • Hm. “Mary Sue” character has many assumptions/meanings in the literary world. For some, it is any self-insertion of the writer, for others it is when the character is obviously acting as wish-fulfillment for the writer. Sometimes it is a character who is excessively romantic or over-traumatized, or who never does anything wrong; and/or is infallible.
I do tend to insert a little of myself into each character, but the characters themselves are driven and louder than me. They tend to get their way. If they don’t come across as real or have flaws, they don’t seem to have dimension. I do identify with each of them and hope readers do too. But I’m sure there’s some out there (as not everyone takes the same things away from every story) that might disagree or might not connect. :)

  47. if you could go anywhere in the world on a vacation where would you go?

  48. If you could be one character from any one of your books which character would you choose to be and why?

    • Oh man. Unfair! LOL. Hm. It would be a close call between Sammy in Ghost of You or Faith in All of Me. Sammy for the hot guy, cool job, and she gets to travel. Faith for the hot guy, great location, and wonderful friends. :)

  49. What things inspired you for writing books ?
