Stumbling Down Memory Lane Part 1: Brought to you by Off the Fang!

Every once in a while, I get sentimental. Could be the weather, time of year, or amount of alcohol consumed, but whatever the cause, I always end up skimming through one of my favorite novels. I might read just a paragraph or a chapter or I might lock myself in my bedroom and read the whole damn thing. The time spent with the novel isn’t the important part – the way I feel after I put it back on the shelf is.

Throughout my many years as a reader and the epically humongous amount of books I’ve read, there have been a select few that stick with me. For the next few weeks, I’m going to introduce you to them. Each one has meant something special to me, either because it opened up a door to a new genre or because it surpassed my expectations and showed me a new way to look at the paranormal world.

This week’s novel is Red by Jordan Summers. It’s a post-apocalyptic dark romance about a military woman and the hairy man beast who wants to eat her in all the wrong ways. It’s not a cozy romance, so it wasn’t a hit in Romancelandia. There are some deliciously erotic scenes, so strict Urban Fantasy fans didn’t know what to do with it. Basically, it was released about five years too early, right before the big melding of the two genres. Consider it the Firefly of literature.

My review is located here: http://www.bittenbybooks.com/2864/red-by-jordan-summers/. What I expect from me – because you KNOW you have to chit chat with me – is simple:
1) Read the review
2) Tell me if you’ve read the book
3) Tell me if you’d LIKE to read the book and why

It’s that easy. No, I’m not hosting a giveway, ya damn vultures. I’m just engaging you. : )

  1. Sounds like I’m in luck. I came across this whole series a couple of years ago and snatched it up. Unfortunately, it resides on the shelf of “lost books” gathering dust. However, I’m going to the beach next week and have been busily piling a suitcase full of series books, who needs clothes anyway, and this sounds like a nice addition. Let you know in two weeks what I think about it.

    • Awesome!! We seem to have similar taste in books, so I’m curious if you’re going to love it as much as I do. It’s dark and twisty. Love it!!

  2. Oh, I know what you mean. Every once in a while I’ll re-read a book that just stuck with me over time. I have no idea what it is about the book, but I definitely have my choice books like that too.

Okay, so as long as you don’t send the firing squad after me for this…I have not heard of this book. I know! I don’t know how I missed this! The only thing I can think of is that it came out while I was having one of my TBR list overloads.

Every couple of years the list grows to the point where it develops a sense of self. Then said book-like creature tries to devour me like a version of Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors. It’s true! That’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it.

Back to the book, I am definitely going to have to read this series now though. I like the fact that it’s one of those genre-mixer books. But I think you sealed the deal with the Firefly of literature comparison!

    • The book actually inspired my Halloween costume one year. I loved her tagline: what if Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf were the same person? So awesome!

Yay, the TBR creature died a horrible death a few months ago when I moved in with my boyfriend. The house is about half the size of the one I was renting, so instead of getting rid of useless things like the couch, we got rid of three of my bookshelves. : ( The books are now at his parent’s house. I weep for them nightly. Sometimes, if the lighting is just right, I can still see them…

      • Ooh, now there’s a concept. I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m going to do for Halloween

And my condolences. Three bookshelves gone! Separated from the books! Maybe you could visit them once a week. Okay, that is just cruel and unusual punishment. You poor thing. Here’s hoping for a speedy reunion!

  3. sounds very interesting and something that I would like to read

  4. Cover looks familiar to me, like I have seen it on a blog or two. I know I have not read it. I would have remembered had I did.

The book sounds interesting and different from the norm out there. So I could see myself reading that one. I really don’t read too many stories of that type so it would be refreshing.

  5. I actually read this book about a year ago. It was okay, in my opinion. I don’t know if it was the style of writing or Gina’s character that put me off a bit. I did love the action, and overall storyline.

  6. I’ve not read this yet but it sounds really good and I would like to see how the point of view thing was done. I love the idea of it. The way you describe it has definitely caught my attention.

  7. I haven’t read it, but I’d like to, just to see what it’s about. sounds intriguing.

  8. I can’t believe I haven’t heard of this series before. It’s right up my alley. I’ve been reading more and more post apocalyptic stuff right now, with or without zombies, so this has now gone into my wish list.

I also have series that I go back to more often, I consider them my comfort books, when I need some easy reading and knowing that HEA is right there at the end. And really, I should NOT be re-reading books with my TBR pile so huge, but sometimes I just need that comfort. I’m sort of in a reading slump right now, I have a ton of new books on my kindle, and every night I start playing games on it, even though I say to myself just pick one already and get reading, do I? Nope, I play games. Oh well, maybe tonight I’ll start reading again. Or not. :)

    • I get stuck on Ninjump. There’s no point to the game - a little ninja guy jumps walls! That’s it! - but I can’t put it down!!

I must warn you - the HEA doesn’t happen until the last book in this series. If you NEEEEEED that love, I’d wait for a bit to start this one. Nothing worse than expecting love and roses and getting…well…something else. : )

  9. Same here. Avid reader, lots of books under my belt, but only a select few stick with me or make me want to read them again.

  10. 1) Read the review - DONE!
    2) Tell me if you

  11. I have not read this one (though I do have it on my shelf), but after reading your review I am going to make an effort to read it sooner rather than later. :) I like the idea of the book being lossely based on Red Riding Hood, as I enjoy those types of approaches.

  12. I have never read the book or even heard of it. It does sound interesting though. I love unique stories and will have to check out more about this story find an excerpt/sample or two to try.

  13. Great review! Not sure why I haven’t read this book before, because I’ve had it on my TBR pile forever. Definitively gonna move it to the top of the pile now :)
