Watchers, after five seasons of an admittedly very unique premise, the whimsical and wonderful Eureka ended its run. I know there was much consternation over much of the season leading up to the end, so I will address some of that kerfuffle first.
I will admit to being taken aback by the first episode of this season – up until the end when we saw that the Astraeus crew had been kidnapped and everything we had just seen in the episode was in the minds of the people hooked into a machine. I really thought that was pretty cool.
Many people took issue with some of the following episodes and their decidedly darker tone. While I understand why many felt that way, my reaction is this: with the type of experimentation the citizens of Eureka dealt with on a daily basis, there had to be some sort of repercussions for things going awry. Yes, they lost a few cast members over the years, but I really feel that having the stakes raised so high leading up to the end fit well with the overall scope of the show. How did you feel about this approach?
As for the finale itself, viewers were rewarded with all relationship issues and storylines being wrapped up, including a last-minute reprieve for the town itself from an unsuspected (at least on my part) source. One of my favorite aspects of the series was always the extremely likeable characters, so I appreciated being able to see where they were headed.
My favorite scenes and lines from the episode:
“With the thin blue line that separates innovation from annihilation, I think we’ve had a pretty good run” (Carter, in the opening scene), a line I feel kind of sums up the show.
“You guys are smart, but the sheriff is the strong force. He holds it all together” (Holly).
“Eureka’s never been about the town, it’s always been about the people” (Carter).
I got a kick out of the yellow caution tape that said, “Wormhole – Keep Back.”
The last scene, with Carter and Zoe on their way out of town passing themselves from several years earlier into Eureka was a sort of “gotcha” moment that made me want to go back and re-watch the first episode immediately.
I loved this show, saw every episode, and feel satisfied with the way it ended, though I would have preferred for the show to continue.
Did you watch the finale? If so, what parts did you most enjoy, and what parts didn’t appeal to you?
On a related note, what other show finales do you think hit the nail on the head, so to speak, giving great series the send-off they deserved, and which did you not care for at all?
*Warehouse 13 and Alphas both return Monday, 7/23, and Lost Girl now airs on Friday at 10:00 (it actually moved there this past week, beginning 7/20). Next week we will discuss all three of these shows, plus True Blood.
Happy viewing!

I have the whole last two seasons to watch of Eureka but it’s awesome to hear that it won’t be a waste of my time even though the show was canceled.
Lisa, you will definitely not be wasting your time.
I’m watching the final episodes now but as for the darkness of the last several episodes I think it’s appropriate - the people in this town have been through some funny, tragic and sometimes downright horrendous experiences and that’s going to lead to some darkness. I will miss this show because as you said - it was quirky!
Maria, I’m glad you agree about the darkness aspect. I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts about the finale after you get to see it.
You know, besides a couple of crossover events, I never watched the show. I started at the very beginning, but I think it came on at the same time as something else.
At the end of every season I vowed to catch up, but I completely procrastinated and never did. But I know people who do watch it, and they don’t seem to be liking how it’s ending. Of course they could be just mad that it IS ending.
As for other show finales, there are a couple that I still gripe about. Dollhouse is one. I know they tried to wrap up all the loose ends and to an extent they did, but it still would have been better if it had another season.
Rae, I liked Dollhouse, and even though the post-apocalyptic episodes were my favorites, I do agree that it would have been nice if they could have wrapped things up more neatly than they were able to.
I watched the final show and I truely liked it. It ended in the same way that made me want to watch every one of the seasons. It always made me think
and always made me smile. I liked it when the pine cone hit the sheriff. He
was the one that made me really like all of the seasons. Sad to see it go. Lost Girl is still on and I do love it!!
Lisa, you have pinpointed here what I also enjoyed about the show — it could make you smile and make you think, especially about the repercussions of one’s actions.
I absolutely agree that Eureka was never about the town, it was always about the people. Even the non-humans, like Carter’s house.
Roni, very true — Sara and Andy were important members of the cast. And honestly, wasn’t Andy the creepiest in the alt-verse created in the hive-mind matrix?
Grimm’s finale made you want and anticipate for the start of the second series. Man I cannot wait for that!
Merlin’s finale also kept me anticipating more and more.
Boo! I really don’t watch any of those shows so I cannot really participate.
I love alot of shows but dont often watch similar ones, or if fav actors go to dif shows, sometimes the shows are not interesting enough for me.
And I thought it was significant that it was Carter’s statement.
I need to watch this show!
I didn’t even know there was a finale upcoming. I have heard of the show but never watched it. The good thing is that if I do I can start from the beginning and really see how the characters develop.
I watched the the beginning episodes, but I’m beind on quite a bit, so I need to catch up. I’m glad to hear that you liked the finale, and I’m glad it wraps everything up.
Can’t wait for the return of Alphas. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters on it.
I have alphas in the DVR, and hope to watch it tonight. My husband enjoys that show, which means I don’t get as far behind.
I was sad to see Eureka end. I loved the characters and how they interacted with each other, very natural. The show itself was full of laughs and wow the brains and ideas on that show. Maybe a spinoff??
Heather, I haven’t heard anything about a spin-off, and I think it’s unlikely. However, a couple of tv movies would be nice…
Eureka was cancelled??? What in the bloody hell are they thinking??? Eureka is one my favorite TV shows. : ( Of course, I don’t have cable - I watch it on Netflix - so I could be part of the reason it was cancelled, lol.
I’m midway through Season 3 and I’ve already bawled my eyes out and laughed a sizeable part of my backside off.
Yes, Jackie, sad but true — the show ended its run on 7/16. I always enjoyed it, and am really sorry it is now over. However, they at least knew the end was coming and were able to wrap things up the way they wanted to.
And hey, thanks a lot for contributing to the cancellation…
I do what I can to make others suffer. ; )
Carol,
Have you seen the pic of DB Jackson on this site? Tell me if you think he looks like Dyson from Lost Girl?
Lisa, this is hilarious — I have met the author in person, and this never even ocurred to me. However, you are correct — his picture here does bear a very striking resemblance to Dyson. The next time I see David in person I will certainly be looking more closely…
I didn’t get to see a lot of Eureka, however, I did see all of Grimm and True Blood. I loved the season ending of Grimm and can’t wait for it to come out on DVD so I can buy it, and I have all 4 seasons of True Blood so far on DVD, can’t get enough of that show.
Just watched the episode where Bo and her crew had out of body experiences. Laughed my ass off at Kinsey in Dyson’s body, checking out the package and studly Dyson with his girly moves. One of the funniest episodes I’ve seen.
Lisa, I agree — that episode was hilarious!
I saw the finale and I liked how they got funding to continue on. I didn’t see that coming.
I really like the start of the final season. It was very different and exciting. I was disappointed when they pretty much said “psych!” in the next episode and reversed it all.
