Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Haven

Haven - 10:00pm EST Friday, Syfy

Your hostess: Brit

The latest episode of Haven should be recorded for anyone looking for a good appetite suppressant. The story revolves around a plague that causes the food in Haven to inexplicably rot and spoil in a matter of seconds (usually when you are putting it in your mouth). I think the most repulsive was when the cow explodes and this black sludge oozes from it. The group hurl at the farmer’s market was hilarious. It just takes one to get the party started.

There were plenty of funny and lighthearted moments, as well. When Audrey asks for the newspaper guys’ opinions on a dress and gives them an impromptu fashion show, and when the lady at the market hit on Nathan — priceless. Did you have a favorite comedic moment?

I think my favorite quotable moment was when Audrey and Nathan were in the truck and dead birds were plummeting from the sky. Audrey says, “I’ve seen this movie, it doesn’t end well.” I will second that.

We got to see a softer side to Duke. Did you like that? And there seems to be some sexual tension in the air between he and Audrey. More importantly what do you think of that?

I really liked this episode but I am so ready to learn more about the Colorado Kid. If they would just give a little hint each episode I would be happy.

So, how did you like the episode?

Dear Watchers, stay tuned for more excitement next week.

  1. I missed this episode! I don’t have a recorder so I will just have to see it when they rerun it. It sounds like a really good barfing time! Glad to know what scenes to be looking for. Lisa D.

  2. I missed it also and can’t wait for the rerun-one great thing about syfy!!
It sounds like my kind of show-lol lots of gore!

  3. I didn’t get a chance to see it either.

  4. I saw this episode and am so in love with this show now. I’m glad they’re finally getting into Audrey’s character more. They’re getting into Nathan and Duke more too.
It’s almost like when TV shows are made with two main characters (especially a man and a woman team) that the characters have to be complete opposites. I’m glad they’ve finally decided to let the characters on the show be who they are instead of forcing the “typical” partner stereotype. Same goes for Warehouse 13 too, but that’s just my opinion.

I too am waiting for more Colorodo Kid clues. I have a feeling they will delve more into once characters become more established and involved into what’s happening with the town.

As for this episode though I’ll have to agree, the cow pretty much did it for me too. I think it was the fact that the black ooze was coming out of its udders. Not cool and fairly gross.

The best and most hilarious scene was easily Audrey getting fashion advice from the newspaper guys. Even better is that they were right! I would totally ask them for advice.

And the scene with the market, how everybody started getting sick despite the fact that some of them didn’t even eat the food. It reminded me of one of my favorite scenes in The Goonies. I don’t know how many people remember it or have even seen it . There was a scene when Chunk was spilling his guts about every bad thing he had ever done and he talks about how he threw fake vomit over a balcony at a theatre. Then everybody started getting sick all over each other. Funny, but wrong.

And yeah I watch a lot of TV.

    • I still watch Goonies every time it comes on tv. One of my favorites. I alsolike the fact that they let Audrey and Nathan be themselves.

  5. I really need to start watching this show but I really don’t even know what it’s about

    • It’s about an FBI agent who is tracking an escapee who fled to Haven. Once there she realizes the town is a haven for supernatural activity. She also doesn’t know anything about her parents and when she sees a pic of a woman who looks like her in an old newspaper she decides to stay. She wants to find out more about the woman she thinks was her mom.
      That’s a brief outline.

  6. Ew! I’ve never even heard of this show before but the idea of food spoiling like that is enough to turn my stomach. I haven’t read Colorado Kid yet but I’ll have to now that I know about the show.

  7. Wish I’d seen the episode. Hate missing good shows.

  8. Dog gone it, I thought I was caught up. Guess I’ll need to watch it. Funny, for my BF it’s a ‘when I watch it, I like it but I never want to select it’. I’m the one who goes, ‘Haven tonight, honey, okay?’

Carmen, an FBI agent follows an escaped felon to the small town of Haven. He’s dead when she gets there and it looks like murder. She volunteers to help local police investigate. There’s a tiny bit of strangeness (guy wasn’t shot, he was thrown off cliff with telekinesis). Someone shows an old newspaper clipping to the agent, who was raised in foster care. The clipping shows a woman who bears a remarkable resemblance. She decides to stay in town to see if there’s a link to her history.

Episode by episode, the strangeness mounts. We learn more and more about the oddities of the the town; and its history.

  9. I really am enjoying this show. I haven’t got to watch this episode yet~have it recorded. Got to get on it now.

  10. still don’t watch….maybe if it comes out on dvd

  11. I love the bad boy Duke, especially in this episode. I think he is a bad boy shell with a sweet yummy center. And he’s so purdee…
I love Friday night television again, Eureka and Haven.

  12. This is a show I have been on the fence with — don’t get me wrong, I kinda like it. But it is moving kind-of slow. It isn’t one of my *favorites*. BUT I’m so intrigued by the Colorado Kid stuff/why Audrey is there/what that picture she found means/etc

That food stuff was gross lol. Oh! My favorite part was what you mentioned
    - the birds! I immediately thought of the movie.

I am not good w/the character names yet, though!

I do enjoy watching it after Eureka. (I really watch too much tv! ;) )

    • It did start out with more of a whimper than a bang but it is getting better with each episode. At least for me.

  13. I have to say that I’m pleasantly surprised by Haven. The pilot wasn’t that great for me, but the second episode got more intriguing and the past few have been my type of thing. I really like the main characters too and how Audrey might fit into it all.

    • I like that they started slowly and are building momentum. Better than the other way round. Start with a bang and meander to a whimper…

  14. Eww! I haven’t seen this episode yet and was really looking forward to it though I’m definitely going to make sure I’ve got an empty stomach as I tend to be a group hurler. Can’t wait for the exploding cow and the Hitchcock reference !

  15. I have it taped on the DVR but have not had a chance to watch it yet.

  16. I’ve never seen this show. *hangs head in shame*

  17. I missed it…

  18. I liked the Birds reference because I said it right before she did. I HATED the spoiled food/vomiting/cow because I’ve seen spoiled food and could bring up that sense memory too easily. I don’t even want to know how the horror prop guys made that. It was like a horrible plumbing clog mixed with gutter sludge. The dresses were crazy and initially ill-fitting, but the newspaper guys are funny. I did not like the gross-out, so that was distracting, but Duke was helping take the focus off just by being interesting. Otherwise, ick-fest.

    • I don’t normally get icked out unless it involves food. I think we all have a bad food memory that was triggered by the episode.

  19. I haven’t seen Haven yet, and exploding cows don’t make me to want to see it much..

  20. Dovile, this is the only ick-fest that I’ve seen so far; and I’ve seen worse on CSI. The main ick factor is the food and the poor, dead animals. The other episodes have not had anything like this.

Loved the ‘fashion show’ scene but I didn’t see anything wrong with the yellow dress. Maybe it’s a regional thing?

Adored seeing the softer, almost sweet, side of Duke. Course, I think he’s really hot (don’t tell the BF, please).

  21. I’ve not seen this series. But darn it that just sounds gross. Usually don’t go for gross stuff.

  22. I loved this episode! I have to say though that I am a Nathan gal all the way though Duke is mighty nice to look at. I enjoyed the softer side of him, and I LOVE that he’ll be running the restaurant. That should make for some cool moments. My favorite scene was with the guys at the shop. OMG I was laughing so hard I almost had a seizure. That was so awesome! LOL

  23. I can’t believe I have yet to see this! Grrr. I am just going to have make time and catch myself up on them. I am back to work now, and it’s back to not enough hours in a day to do everything!! :)
