Witches with the Enemy by Barb Hendee

Witches with the Enemy: A Novel of the Mist-Torn Witches by Barb Hendee Witches with the Enemy, the riveting third installment in the Mist-Torn witches series, begins just a few months after the events of book two. After a period of calm, dealing primarily with physical complaints from their apothecary customers, sisters Celine and Amelie get called to the castle to see Prince Anton, their benefactor, for whom they also work as seers when needed. Upon their arrival at the castle, the sisters learn Anton’s reprehensible, brutal brother Damek, prince of a neighboring province, has asked for Anton’s help. It seems that during betrothal/marriage negotiations, Damek’s prospective sister-in-law died at the dinner table, and he hopes that Anton’s seers can discover what happened.

The journey to Damek’s province proves difficult for Celine and Amelie, whose family suffered greatly at the hands of the prince and his out-of-control men in past years, but once they reach their destination the two sisters put their respective skills to work-Celine reading people’s futures, and Amelie their pasts. Unfortunately, disaster strikes the very evening of the group’s arrival, placing more pressure upon the women to figure out the sequence of events and who bears the responsibility for them. The investigation reveals surprising information, and in addition making it clear that there may be something or someone more scary than what one may expect.

This time out Amelie’s abilities take center stage, also serving to provide a better sense of her personality and character. The secondary players, most of whom appear for the purposes of this book, come alive on the page, their physical appearances easy to visualize and their voices distinctive. Hendee ramps up the suspense level, pairing it effortlessly with the smoothly flowing narrative, and the tale keeps the reader guessing until the end.

With its recurring characters and deepening endless future story possibilities, this excellent series will hopefully continue for a long time to come. Recommended for readers of all types of fantasy, Witches with the Enemy satisfies on multiple levels.
