Once upon a crime family, there was a princess named Penelope. She is the only daughter of the head of one of the three crime families controlling the black market for organ transplants. However, the best that money can buy is not always enough. Tragically, Penny Landlow has an autoimmune disorder that causes her to bruise with little pressure. Her family has always shielded her from the business and kept her protected on the estate like a bird in a gilded cage.
I cannot begin to imagine what it would be like to have such a debilitating disease and I was intrigued by the depth of the detail that went into discussing it. Penelope is a young woman who just wants to live a normal life, but her illness has compounded her fragility by making the people who love her believe that even something as tender as a hug could hurt her. When an unexpected tragedy strikes her family, Penny finds herself on the run and discovers that she is much stronger than she was ever allowed to believe. She learns to push her fears aside and becomes absolutely fierce in the process. Her character is an amazing testament to what any young woman can become when she is allowed to flourish. Hold Me Like a Breath is today’s version of “The Princess and the Pea” meets “True Grit” and it was impossible to put down.
