A priceless archaeological artifact is stolen from a small museum, and the museum is set ablaze to cover the evidence. Fourteen-year-old Max Carter is riding by on his bike and sees his family museum in flames. He enters the burning building on a rescue mission and nearly gets killed in the process. Just before he makes it out, he sees the priceless charm is missing. He soon discovers that the fire was not an accident and that Seti’s Charm has been stolen. Now Max is on a mission to find out what really happened to the amulet and return it to its rightful home.
I finished this very well-written and fast-paced book in an afternoon. I have always been fascinated by Egyptian artifacts and very much enjoyed the details and symbolism provided about this archaeological find. It made me want to learn more about Seti and I found myself doing research late into the night.
Max is a very likable character who exhibits a strong respect for life and authority. We are also shown his love for his grandfather, along with his fears and insecurities. We can feel his frustration and resentment toward his step-grandmother and learn how he eventually chooses to deal with that.
I appreciate that his young character has the ability to re-evaluate his view of the other characters and the decisions he makes based on the truth as it is revealed to him. I only wish that there was more about the grandfather at the end. That would have wrapped it up nicely for me. I am really excited that Seti’s Charm is the first book in the series and am very much looking forward to Max Carter’s next adventure.
