Bitten by Books
I only choose one- Reconnecting with an ex-lover- as there is usually some awesome backstory here that the author can trickle out to us
The rest are pretty hit or miss with me, it generally depends on the authors presentation whether it’s to become a fav or been there done that story
I picked Mortal Enemies fall in love/bed. This is somewhat entertaining for me as long as it isn’t over done. Next was Hero/Heroine plucked out of obscurity because they are the chosen one. I always have kind of a “what if it were me” moment reading these. Then I chose other. I like the kick ass hero / Heroine story trope where they can go it on their own and have some support/love interest but it isn’t mandatory to keep them “breathing”. hehehe
I like just about any trope as long as it is well written so it was really difficult to pick just three. Since I read a lot of Romantic Suspense, also, anything that heightens the suspense works well for me - and they work just as well in paranormal and urban fantasy!
I am the same way for the most part Linda. It HAS to be well written. I am not so big on the love triangle aspect. Just because it gives me a headache. (hahaha not tonight dear, this trope gives me a headache.)
There are SO many really awesome authors out there. If I start something and it isn’t believable or well written, I dump it asap.
Would abusive past equate as “Tortured hero” and or “Tortured heroine”? I love those kinds of books and I love when the bad boys are redeemed…
Uh good question Rao!
I think you could be tortured by circumstances from your past that weren’t necessarily abusive. Maybe growing up super poor, or losing a parent or sibling stuff like that.
I like it when the bad boys are redeemed too, but not TOO much. They must keep some of their badness. hehe
I recently read a book where the hero and heroine were mortal enemies that turned to love. I actually enjoyed it.
Love triangles tend to aggrivate me. And reunion stories, I guess I like reading the first meeting. I always feel robbed when the characters already know each other from the past
My favorite tropes are:
Mortal enemies fall in love
Hero/Heroine plucked out of obscurity
Bad Boy redeemed by love
I picked the ex-lovers reconnect & mortal enemies fall in love/bed. Really as long as a story is well written, I can generally overlook some of the more negative connotations that come along with genre-reading troupes. I agree with Lisa though, it is pretty hit or miss. It really depends on the author and what they do with their world.
What are your favorite book tropes?
A “Bad Boy” redeemed by the love of the Heroine
Hero/Heroine plucked out of obscurity because they are the Chosen One
Love at First Sight
SOUND SO GOOD.
I’m always looking for that “something” that makes the book unique; makes it different.
I prefer anyrhing paranormal, so paranormal with a twist.
Friends-to-lovers is my favorite!
These are my favorite book tropes:
Abusive Past (hero or heroine)
Reconnecting with an ex-lover
A “Bad Boy” redeemed by the love of the Heroine
I especially like the reconnecting with an ex-lover - or second chance at love.
Abusive past adds necessary depth, It gives reasons for a characters behavior.
Mortal enemies are fun and angry sex can be intresting,
Love triangle….ADULT triangles only! I like the dynamic and if all three work together even better. YA/NA triangles just make me cringe.
Love triangles are awesome when they’re written well enough that I’m not sure which way the romance will go for at least half the book.
I also love enemies that have to work together towards a common goal (romance not necessary) and Magic Returns/Appears, which is close to the whole “chosen one” thing sometimes, but not always.
Who does love a Bad Boy who is saved by his woman? I also like ordinary people who get thrown into extraordinary circumstances and not only survive, but really find out they have unexpected strengths!
Actually, almost all the tropes on the poll are what I don’t like in novels, especially ‘the chosen one’, everyone being too perfect and insta-love. I only voted for enemies turned lovers, because it’s one of my favorites, and bad boy turned good by love.
Well, to pick something from the poll, I went with reconnecting and love at first sight. But in the end, I while I like those, and I don’t think I saw a friends to lovers one which I like… there aren’t any that I just really *love*, given in the end, you can have a favorite plotline, but read a book that used it that just was horrible, and then read a book for a plotline that it isn’t one you look for normally, but absolutely loved how it was done that time. So, yep, there are some that I like, but I can’t say that I really, really love a trope.
Lois
I picked
1.abusive past
2.A Bad boy redeemed by the love of the Heroine
I chose Mortal Enemies fall in Love , I like reading about beginnings of relationships , whether it’s love or just lust, I like feelings of the characters develop. That’s why I hardly like reading about already established relationships. Plus most times enemies to lovers stories usually have more heat. I also like friends to lovers stories trope too.
Reconnecting and mortal enemies turned lovers have always been my favorites. Their is always a lot of sexual tension before they finally give in.
