In The Flesh by J. L. McCale

In the Flesh by J. L. McCaleItana always knew she was different. It was crystal clear when, at the age of five, her Mom slit her arm and slipped a piece of silver under her skin to “keep her safe.” Itana is a half-breed, chosen as a child to be the bride of an immortal named Veris. Wanting no part of it, Itana is living as much like a normal human as she can. When she reaches thirty, five years from now, if Veris does not claim her, the contract, or whatever it is that binds them, will end and she will be free. All she has to do is stay under his radar and be patient.

Itana’s neighbor, Gershon, is a stereotypical long-haired, Harley-riding Fabio. Itana feels the pull of attraction to him and he appears to be attracted to her, but she is not going to allow the relationship to be anything more than a friend and a neighbor. Little does she know, Gershon has a very different ideas, motives and secrets.

The premise of In The Flesh really drew me in. The idea of an arranged marriage with an immortal had great promise, but the characters never really fully developed and left the story a little flat. To be fair, the entire story was told in less than one hundred and twenty pages, but if it had been fleshed out a bit more, I think I could have given it five stars.

About AJ

Blessed by parents who read to her in the womb, AJ learned to read by the age of 3. She now has an entire room dedicated to reading, with shelves of books stacked to the ceiling, in addition to a stack of books in every room. Her obsession with the written word eventually developed into the desire to write her own stories. Someone saw talent in her and she found work as a Writer/Editor. It was pure heaven. Her husband, who rarely read a book, caught the fever and is now engrossed in another series of books. Passing on the tradition of reading to her child in the womb, her daughter now sleeps in a room with stacks of books surrounding her and just won an award for logging the most reading time in a school with over 500 students.
