What starts out as a grand tour of Europe suddenly turns into a nightmare for Daniel and Laura. When they’re tossed off a train in the middle of nowhere, just inside the Romanian border, everything goes to hell in a handbasket. Discovering they’ve lost their passports, their money, and anything that might help them get home to London, they head for the nearest town. Which is when the weirdness starts. Upon their return to London, they think they’ve put it all behind them… but they’re wrong.I really liked Daniel from the start and felt awful for the sad state he was in. He’s had this horrible experience that you’re only allowed to know a tiny bit about. Because of this experience, his fiancé has broken off their engagement and pretty much refuses to have anything to do with him. When odd things start happening to him, you really begin to wonder if he’s losing his mind or just an unreliable narrator.
Laura, on the other hand, I had a hard time liking at first. You know she’s suffering with the aftermath of what happened in Romania, but since you really don’t know what that is for a long while, it’s hard to be sympathetic towards her. As the pieces begin to fall into place, however, I began to take her side a little more.
Mark Edwards is a master of extending suspense. Just when you get to the point where you can’t bear it any longer, he gives you just enough information to rope you back in and get you reading. I found myself completely engrossed in Follow You Home, worrying about the characters, and praying it was all a nightmare, just so they could all wake up. But it’s not. And it’s also not what you think, either. There’s a twist, right at the end, that caught me completely off guard. It was beautiful. I cannot wait to read more by Mr. Edwards in the future.
