To make a fresh start for herself and her son, Trinity Ewing buys an old house in need of renovation. Something about Noah Benningfield, the contractor she hired to do the renovations, makes her feel like Madison is the place where she belongs. What she does not know is that her house is at the center of the small town’s deadly, dark secrets that threaten being revealed when a dead body is found inside her house.
A former youth pastor, Noah is a recovering alcoholic who for far too long used casual sex and alcohol to numb the pain of the unexplained disappearance of his first love. He is gentle, generous, dependable, and completely taken with Trinity. Trinity is sweet, cautious, and slow to trust, but her attraction to Noah and the attention, affection, and tenderness he showers on both her and her son, Micah, makes her want to take a chance with Noah.
The romance between Noah and Trinity is steamy, sweet, and a bit low-key, but ultimately satisfying. Both are haunted by their pasts, and while romance is the last thing either is looking for, they are deeply drawn to each other on an emotional and sexual level.
Unfortunately, uneven pacing, too many character viewpoints that neither further nor add to the story, and almost no action, make this a frustrating and quite unsuspenseful read. The story is complicated with very intense and disturbing content because of all the secrets, and horrible, unspeakable things that have occurred in Madison.
Deeper Than Need did not gain momentum or grasp my complete attention until nearly the last quarter. However, readers who love a slow-build romance and are not put off by multiple character viewpoints, almost no action, and disturbing content should enjoy this intriguing, sweet romance.
