For millennia the Dragon Kings have hidden their existence behind the facade of the Dreagan Distillery. Betrayed by one of their own and a human woman, they hold themselves apart from the world while guarding humankind. Cursed to feel no real emotions to prevent another betrayal and all-out war, something is changing at Dreagan. Enemy dragons frozen by magic show signs of waking, a new king with no knowledge of what he is mysteriously appears in the highlands, and one by one each find a human woman who wakes emotions once thought dead.
With all of the changes, Con, King of the Dragon Kings, and the others, must remain extra vigilant-something dark is drawing them out from the safety of Dreagan Manor, and once again, dragons are being hunted.
Dark Heat is a collection of four short stories that give the reader a glimpse into Dreagan Manor and the lives of the Dragon Kings. Each tale is loosely-connected and there is an overall plot which works incredibly well. Overall Dark Heat is a fun, fast, and spicy read that adds yet another layer to the fantastic world Grant has developed in her Dark series.
The first story, Dark Craving, is all about Hal and Cassie. It is incredibly cute and fun. I really enjoy Cassie (and Duke!) but I would have liked a little bit more detail, especially about the situation with her brother.
The second is Night’s Awakening. Guy is one of my favorite dragons, but I will say it took me some time to warm up to Elena. It may be the circumstance, but Elena starts out kind of annoying. There is a bit more adventure in this one and it furthers the mystery.
The third story, Dawn’s Desire, is hands-down my favorite. It raises the action, is fast-paced, and has more danger. It is the first time I felt real tension in the book. Jane and Banan are wonderful together.
Passion’s Claim, the fourth entry, is a bonus story and takes place after the events of Midnight’s Temptation. However, you do not have to have read the Dark Warriors titles to enjoy this story. It is broken into two parts, the first of which actually prompted me to say “awwww” out loud. Banan and Jane are the sweetest couple. I did not enjoy part two as much because Elena and Guy fall victim to one of the tropes that drives me bonkers.
Aside from the few issues I had, Dark Heat is a great addition to the Dark series. I love getting more detail on the dragons but now I really want Con’s story. I cannot wait to meet the woman that can tame the King of Dragon Kings.
