Home from the Sea by Mercedes Lackey

It was a time in England when Lords and Ladies attended a Season in London, and women strolling carried parasols in the summer and Sensible Dress when travelling. It was also a time when use of magic was carefully monitored by a council and Masters of the Elements (Fire, Water, Air and Earth) played a significant role in ensuring there were no abuses by magic-users or elementals themselves. A Master is born - not made, and the most dangerous Master of all is the unknowing and untrained. And so begins Mari’s story.

Blessed by a Demon’s Mark by E.S. Moore

When Blessed by a Demon’s Mark, the excellent third installment in the always-gripping Kat Redding series begins, we find our heroine in the odd town of Delai, at Levi’s home, where she has been for the last four months. Immediately following her brother’s death at the end of book two, Kat left the home she shared with her friend, Ethan, and never looked back. Levi’s “treatments” consist of getting Kat to resist the urge to feed on humans, though she does receive a steady supply of blood bags to keep her from starving. After one particularly disturbing session involving another resident, Kat feels a blinding pain in her head, emanating from the mark made by the demon, Beligral, reminding her of her obligation to see him one more time as agreed.

Deliver Me From Temptation by Tes Hilaire

Deliver Me from Temptation, the absorbing second book in the intriguing Paladin Warriors series, focuses on Logan Calhoun, the best friend of Roland, the vampire protagonist of book one. As a Paladin, an angel warrior sent to protect humans from demons and other beings that prey upon them, Logan usually has his work cut out for him, but since he and his comrades scored a major win in the events at the end of the previous book, action has slowed considerably. When Logan, along with his fellow Paladins Alex and Valin, spot a succubus they have been tracking, he feels relief that they have something to do. Unfortunately, while hot on the trail of the demon, Logan stumbles upon (literally) a human woman detective, who seems none too pleased, demonstrated by the gun she aims at him. Read More »

WWW: Wonder by Robert J. Sawyer

Warning: This is the third and final book in the series; please read the other two books before you read this book! I didn’t realize this until partway into the book, but thankfully, the author was fairly good at recapping the general gist of what was going on.

An Artificial Intelligence—or AI—is “born”, or really “emerged”, through a string of mutant packets on the Internet. One 16-year-old-girl, blind from birth, is the first one to “see” and make contact with this AI, whom she has named Webmind. Through a newly developed (and uber futuristic) device, cleverly called an eyePod, she has been given the gift of sight…and what she sees is webspace and an AI!

Tainted Night, Tainted Blood, the riveting second installment in the Kat Redding series, opens with Kat—a vampire on a mission to wipe out all werewolves and vampires that attack and abuse Purebloods (humans)—arriving at the home of Countess Telia, a relatively new but particularly vicious head of a vampire house. Kat does not expect to find her target and everyone else in the house dead, but the massacre she discovers makes one thing very clear: someone or something using both claws and a sword has been on a rampage. After consulting with Mikael, her source of information, Kat learns that other similar attacks have been occurring, mostly attributed to her Lady Death persona.

Saving Face by J.E. Taylor

I have been with Steve Williams since the beginning and I have grown to love this series. The first book, Dark Reckoning, did not agree with me, but Georgia Reign and Crystal Illusions were a treat to read. I found Saving Face even better, and I love the way Taylor chooses to focus more on the people and inter-connected relationships rather than solely on the violence.

Steve Williams and his partner are always a step behind the Windwalker serial killer, then his son is found at the scene of a gruesome crime that the Windwalker committed, Steve will have to prove his son’s innocence and find the crazed murderer before his world falls apart.
