In the ensuing chaos, Deacon gets pulled into the portal and seems to be gone. Shortly thereafter, Lily and Rose are grabbed by a winged creature and taken outside, and when she looks into its eyes, Lily realizes that Deacon survived but has reverted to his demonic form.

Picking up immediately where its predecessor ended, this final chapter finds the vampire-hunting team of Dawn, psychics Kiko and Natalia, the spirit Friends, Jonah/Costin, and Dawn’s father, Frank, regrouping at their headquarters, interrogating the captured Claudius/Claudia, one of the co-masters of the London Underground. While the team’s primary interest concerns the location of the Underground, Dawn also seeks to discover what she can about the “shadows,” ninja-like protectors that the reader knows as “custodes.”
