The Kingdom of Valdemar is experiencing a peaceful period and it is the job of the Heralds to ensure that it stays that way. Mags is a full Herald, with a powerful Mind-Magic that allows him to mind-speak and hear all Companions and humans. He also has less obvious skills and expertise that makes him a perfect fit to work under the Spymaster Nikolaus. The Midwinter celebration is underway in Valdemar and highborn families are traveling to Haven to participate in the many parties, celebrations, and to find spouses for their children.

Mags, a Herald of Valdemar, escaped the clutches of the Sleepgivers, a clan of assassins, but he knows that there will be no safety for him and his loved ones in Valdemar against the determined clan. Alix Black, the daughter of a Banner House, was the best scout under Arran Green’s command. She was fast and moved with a stealthy grace, and when paired with Liam, the two were exceptional. Alix was headstrong, though, and disobeyed a direct order to stay behind enemy lines when she rushed onto the battlefield at Boswyck in order to save the King, breaking his leg by pulling his horse over onto him. The King was so impressed by Alix’s quick thinking and reaction time that he promoted her to Captain and appointed her as his personal bodyguard.

Griffen McCandles is known as the
“Grifter” for good reason. He has drifted his way through college and life in general with the mission to get by doing as little as possible. He is also a card shark. His parents are gone but his uncle, who paid his way through college, has a thriving business that Grifter has always assumed would hold an executive role for him. When he finally meets with his uncle to discuss his future, he is shocked to discover that, instead of a cushy job, his uncle is spinning some tale (or is it a tail) about Griffen’s coming from a long line of dragons. Yup, you read that right-fire-breathing, tail-twitching, scales and all, dragon. They walk among us.

Witches in Red, the terrific second installment in the Mist-Torn Witches series, picks up a few months after the events of book one. Seer sisters Celine and Amelie have been making a life for themselves in the town of Castle Seone, after having solved a group of murders for Prince Anton. Celine finds peace and satisfaction in running the apothecary shop, though she has not used her gift of foresight since the murders, but Amelie feels aimless and a bit inconsequential.
