An RT Virgin No Longer

Twas the night before Christmas… oh wait, wrong story.

Twas the night before I was to meet my friend and fellow reviewer, Virginia, for the Romantic Times Book Convention aka RT and I had realized I had yet to pack. I admit to being a total enigma at times. Like the fact that I have OCD and make lists and checklists while I am also a major procrastinator and usually screw myself over waiting for the very last minute to do what I need to do.

Consort by Kim Knox

“Golden light edged my body as I stood before the long, gilded mirror. I spread a palm over the wrinkles marring the smooth run of the sheer silk gown. A wry smile pulled at my mouth. The practically transparent black silk revealed curves and planes of very bare skin. The gown left very little to the imagination, just as it was meant to. I straightened my shoulders and lifted my chin. Being a reiver, the fertile daughter of a queen, it was my time to hunt down a mate. Any way I could.”

Zombie Jack by Samantha Winston

Remember the movie “My Boyfriend’s Back” where this guy is hopelessly in love with a girl, dies, and then comes back to life as a zombie still hoping to win her over? Yeah, it wasn’t that great or that memorable of a movie honestly…BUT Zombie Jack is not only another kettle of fish, with a different tale altogether, Zombie Jack’s story is actually quite good and much more memorable. Then what is with the reference to the B movie made in the early ’90s? Well, because Jack is back and someone is so gonna get in trouble.

The trouble with destiny is that it always brings trouble. Seriously. No joke. Always. Sarah just wanted to be a simple, quiet, boring accountant. She happens to be great with numbers. It would have worked - no harm, no foul - and lifewould have been good. But of course, Destiny had to rear its ugly head and not only change Sarah’s plans for a calm and peaceful life, Destiny had to come in and turn her life completely upside down.

With identical birthmarks on the insides of her wrists resembling two half moons, Sarah was born to be a daemon slayer. Dorian knew that as soon as he found her and saved her from the attack of her very first daemon. While she would have promptly thanked him for his heroic endeavor, he then had to go and tear out the daemon’s shriveled black heart and hand it to her expecting her to destroy it. Of course, Dorian then had to explain to her that she was the daemon slayer he had been searching for and inform her of the true nature of the markings on her wrists: they were meant to give her the power to destroy a daemon’s vile heart.

Damn fate! There are plenty of times when Sarah wishes she could have stayed unaware of her true calling, but every time she looks at Dorian, she finds the resolve to do what she must for the greater good. Always Dorian, Dorian, Dorian. How can she successfully fight evil when Dorian keep creeping into her thoughts - distracting her - with his deliciousness. Except Dorian would never think of her in a sexy way. Dorian is all work and no play. Double damn. Not only is Dorian a strict work-aholic, he also has to be all noble about how he feels about Sarah. He wants to protect her. From what? Himself? What could Dorian be hiding that could change how anyone, especially Sarah, would feel about him?

The Trouble with Destiny is simply a delightful read. It is in the first person and I found it fun as well as funny being able to see things from Sarah’s perspective. This book has a lighthearted feel to it that anyone can really enjoy. It is simple and sweet while fresh and entertaining at the same time.

Rogue by Cheryl Brooks

Kyra Aramis is just a simple piano instructor from Earth. Really, that’s it. Never having been out of the country, much less the planet or the solar system, she now finds herself wondering why she agreed to take on a job on a planet somewhere far, far away where she would probably be the only Terran woman for miles (or planets) around. On Darconia, a planet ruled by lizards, is where she, the simple piano teacher from Earth, will be instructing the queen’s daughter to play those 88 keys. That is, if the heat does not kill her first. Why did she decide to leave again?

Once on Darconia, Kyra finds her whole body automatically covered with sun dried sweat and surrounded by huge lizards with rather big jaws that look like they could bite her in half. She has no idea how to tell if they are male or female and has a fear deep down in the pit of her stomach that she looks like a nice and tasty lunch to them. Kyra is on the verge of just calling it quits and rushing home, until Queen Scalia introduces Kyra to her favored pet “cats“.

Tychar and Trag are Scalia’s Zetithian pet slaves who live in a gilded cage - well treated, given everything they could need, just under lock and key. One with the coloring of a Bengal tiger and the other favoring that of a Siberian tiger, these brothers have gone twenty long years without the loving of a good woman. So once Kyra is within arms reach, they both tell her she smells like desire. And after two decades, it drives both brothers to find a way to persuade her that Darconia is not so bad after all.

Deciding to tolerate the heat on the desert planet, Kyra now has to figure out what to do with two tigers both vying for her attention. She deeply cares for one but she also desires the other. Could she possibly find a way to have both? But her time on Darconia is running short. A small contingent of the planets inhabitants are not happy with the changes Scalia has been making in her regime. Someone is out to get the throne and eliminate all foreigners who threaten the status quo - including Kyra and the Zetithians.

To put it simply, Rogue is just sexy. Really sexy. Sizzling kind of sexy. Honestly, only Cheryl Brooks can deliver a line like, “I can give you joy unlike any you have ever known” and not only make it work but also make you want to melt in the process. This is truly an enjoyable read. Besides, you know what they say, “Once you go cat, you never go back.”

Witch Heart by Anya Bast

Claire grew up on the daaeman (or as the humans know it, “demon”) realm of Eudae. As the handmaiden to the Cae of the Ytrayi, Claire was well kept and safe from all the other daaeman. But that did not stop Rue from tweaking and experimenting with Claire’s magick. Nor did that stop him from placing a powerful daaeman weapon inside of her before blasting her to the aeamon (or human) realm of earth to protect her -not to mention the weapon, too- from the Atrika invasion.

Still, for her first time back on earth, it was not the welcome she originally thought it would be. Why would people think she was insane and place her in a hospital because she was looking for elemental witches and trying to avoid the Atrika chasing after her?

When the air witches heard Claire’s mental cry of help, Adam, with his strong fire magick, was called to rescue her. Saving her from the mental ward was no difficulty, but keeping her safe from the blasted Atrika who want the elium stored in her body was. The Atrika are ruthless and would have no qualms killing Claire and a hundred others to get that weapon - a weapon so strong, it would give them the power to take over Eudae and the Ytrayi. Now Adam has to find a way to keep the demons at bay until the coven can figure out how to get the elium out of Claire.

At least Claire has an ace up her sleeve. While Rue was tweaking her earth magick, he somehow transformed it, giving her the abilities to call on all the different elemental magicks, making it more like daaeman magick. Now if she could somehow find a way to weave the magick of fire, earth, water and air together, as Rue had originally intended, then maybe she might be able to keep the Atrika off their backs before anyone else gets hurt. If Rue put the elium in her, there must be a way for them to get it out. The real question is “how” and time is running out.

Witch Heart is a story that will captivate its readers. It will hook you from the first few pages and then take you on a wild ride. It is a fast-paced story but it is also a story that will make you feel emotion. Anya Bast uses words like Monet used paint. It‘s vibrant. It’s alive. Readers will be able to see the story come to life as it just leaps out of the pages.

Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs by Molly Harper

Jane Jameson has had a very, very bad day. First she loses her job as a librarian so her boss’s stepdaughter can be hired to do a less than mediocre job and play with fires (while working with the books!). To cap off the evening, she decides to drown her sorrows in liquor. But on her way home, her car just up and dies leaving her to walk, drunk in not so sensible sandals on dark, dirty country roads. Then of course she just has to fall in a ditch, which would have no been so very awful if she was not shot by another drunken idiot who had mistaken her for a deer. Seriously beyond all that, dying and waking up as a vampire was just icing on the cake.

Gabriel Nightengale saw Jane at the bar and somehow wanted to keep watch over her, protect her. So he kept her company while she drank fruity drinks, walked her to her vehicle and followed her on her way home. Something just compelled him to make sure she made it safely. Unfortunately, he did not follow closely enough to prevent her from…well…getting shot and bleeding to death. But he could save her life by giving her a chance at immortality. If he could just persuade her to accept his help and guidance now that she has awakened as the newly undead, it would make things a whole lot easier.

Could you believe there’s a welcoming committee for the newly undead? And a guide book? Well, there is! Now if only the guide came with basic instructions for women like Jane, then it would make the undead life a piece of cake. However, there are things about being a vampire that one just has to learn from experience - like be careful when picking a fight with any vampire, because they could end up deader than dead and you could be blamed for their murder.

Vampires have rules. Worse than that, they have their own judges and juries…and their own executioners, too. So Jane’s undead life might be cut short if she doesn’t figure out who framed her and soon.

If you are looking for a new read or a new author to get into, Molly Harper’s Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs is the book for you. It shows literary wit at its finest. This story is not only entertaining and funny, it’s also charming and a joy to read. Did I mention the engaging quips? Ms. Harper’s debut to the published world is one that definitely deserves noting, and I, for one, am looking forward to her next book, Nice Girls Don’t Date Dead Men. Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs definitely has a memorable bite.
