In Dragon’s Heart, we learn that dragons are real. They existed on the Earth in a time of free-flowing magic until the time of man brought the fear about any who are powerful and different. When their species became hunted due to the betrayal of one of their own, they had to flee to another world called Akgon. But leaving Earth cut them off from much of their powerful magic and their truemates, many of whom had to shed their dragon bodies and go incognito as human. Their kind are called the brethren and they are back to reclaim their magic. Draakar, the Dark Lord, the King of the dragons, comes to find his true mate, a crucial enterprise for the survival of his people and for his own heart.LaVerne Thompson has created a story rich with myth and legend about Dragons. The world-building for her dragons feels distinctive and is very appealing. Draakar is a larger-than-life character with mega charisma. I liked that even with his incredible power and authority, Maya is his equal in every way, and he respects her for it. I liked that they had a destined bond, but Draakar still had to build the trust between them due to the past and the choice he was forced to make to save his people. The manifestations of the dragons’ abilities were fun, especially in how they could create things and change their clothing, as well as more fantastic acts of magic. I also liked how the cast of characters is multi-cultural. In a big world with paranormal creatures, it makes a lot more sense to see ethnic diversity.
The world-building is a strong foundation for this paranormal romance with two charismatic leads. However, Dragon’s Heart could have been more exciting, with more descriptive action scenes and more direct confrontations between Draakar and Maya and the villain. While the end dragged a bit, and the epic standoff was anti-climactic, overall, this novel was interesting and the romance drew me in. Dragons have an age-old appeal to fantasy lovers, and Thompson taps into this sense of awe that readers feel for these majestic legendary creatures.
