When her little sister dies at the hands of Father Wisdom, Self-Abnegation in the Service of the Lord believes it to be her fault and leaves the only home she has ever known. Raised in the compound of New Harmony, there is so much of the world she has not yet experienced. Everything about this new world is either wonderful or shocking. The lights, sounds and even the smells are all overwhelming and foreign.
Hitchhiking from New Orleans, Self is rescued by Stephanie, who has her own reasons for leaving the Big Easy. They are headed to Seattle where Stephanie’s brother is fixing their grandmother’s house to get it ready for sale. Striking a deal with “Abby” to help each other out, Steph takes her in, sends her to the same Catholic school she once went to and tries to help Abby acclimate. Unfortunately, even with the right clothes and a great school, Abby doesn’t quite fit in and as her frustration increases, her temper rises and so does the beast within her.
There is so much to love about Waking Up Naked in Strange Places that I just hated for it to end. While they are travelling, Steph tells Abby one of the stories that her Cajun grandmother used to tell about rougarou and it brought back a rush of memories of Louisiana. Then we are treated to rich descriptions of Seattle and the locals. We watch Abby go from a lost, confused young girl to a fearless, faithful friend. The story is layered with messages and lessons on things that typical teenage girls experience and struggle with. It is a great read and I am really looking forward to the next one.
