We did not listen. We ignored all the signs. What if the drought never ended?
Now Arizona, California, and Nevada are struggling over water rights to the dwindling Colorado River. Catherine Case builds arcologies in Southern Nevada. They are luxurious, water-rich sanctuaries that insulate its residents from the surrounding brutal, scorching hot desert environment. An abundance of water is pushed through the arcologies to build and sustain them, while the water-deprived locals struggle to obtain the most minimal rations. To keep water flowing the direction she needs it to go, Catherine has her own version of the mafia in a team that takes out the competition. Angel Velasquez is her most trusted employee and the Water Knife that cuts off the water supply wherever she points the blade.
Lucy Monroe is a tough, fearless journalist who cannot resist the draw of the story, even when it puts her life in danger. Maria Villarosa is a smart young girl whose dreams keep getting crushed under the heat and dust of the dry, harsh world around her. When these three lives begin to unintentionally intersect, it sets off a chain reaction of fear and imminent danger. Is there any possibility of survival?
The Water Knife is is a truly frightening novel, filled to the brim with graphic violence, torture, murder and brutal betrayal. I closed the book with so many unresolved feelings. I was impressed with the realistic dialogue and was relieved that there were even a few funny moments to give me a chance to take a break from the darkness.
The story is centered on a very possible and tragic future but it also offers thought-provoking potential solutions. I am experiencing a very strong love/hate relationship with this story. I know I will continue thinking about it for days and agonize over the horrific details but, in the end when I reflect back, I realize that the mark of a solid novel is precisely when it gets this type of reaction from me and I am forced to think it all through and talk about it out loud with my friends.
