There is a horde of creatures called The Throng that roam from planet to planet through a gateway, subjugating the inhabitants for food and sport. They take all they can from the planet and then move on to the next. Right now they are on Earth. Humanity had been overconfident, thinking they were a superior race, but the monsters took over. They are soon ready to move on to the next planet, seeing as how the human race is all but extinct. But all hope is not gone quite yet. There is The Raven’s Child.
Magistrate Bleak takes the news of recent monster murders to the High Lord Caitiff. Most monsters no longer believe in the old faith, where the Raven’s Child will leave the land of the dead and walk among them passing judgment on their actions, sending them on to the afterlife. High Lord Caitiff only looks on it as a challenge. He’s unsure if this is the real Goddess come calling, or just a human pretending at dress up, but either way he looks on it as a challenge. He hopes it is the Goddess, and does not care if he ruins what is left of this world trying to find her.
Carissa lost her parents to the monsters at a young age. Her sole remaining purpose is to kill as many of them as she can, and to cause as much terror as possible she has taken on the guise as the Raven’s Child. She has no clue that her actions have started to give hope to the few remaining humans. She has taught them that there is someone willing to stand up to the monsters, and that they can be killed. She knows the High Lord is searching for her, and she will not let any more people be killed because of her.
The Raven’s Child is a unique monster story, I loved how they came to be here on Earth, and Thomas Sniegoski has imbued them with a rich history, and gives them an afterlife to be afraid of. No one truly wants to die and meet their maker with bad deeds hanging over their soul. The artwork is topnotch. Thomas Sniegoski has made a race of diverse creatures and Tom Brown has brought them to life. I would love to revisit this world, and will look for more from these talented people.
