Things have been coming apart for a while now, but every day the earthquakes become stronger, more violent. Coupled with the plague decimating the world’s population, things are looking bleak for the survivors. Unable to make it home to her family before the earthquakes destroy their home, Emma finds herself running for safety with her friend, Larry. But when she loses Larry, too, she is left facing the future alone. But what kind of future does she have left?Emma is a very interesting character and although I wavered back and forth on whether I liked her or not, in the end, I came to really appreciate her strength, courage, and determination to survive. Despite becoming a vampire, she retains her compassion and kind heart. This is pretty impressive considering all the humans around her have lost their compassion, not to mention their ever-loving minds in some chapters. No matter how insane the situation gets, or how hungry she might be, she finds a way to stay true to herself and her beliefs.
I will admit that Matthew Whitefeather was my favorite character in this novel. Having learned the old ways while growing up on the reservation, Matthew is probably one of the few survivors prepared for what the world is throwing at him. He has an old world charm about him, bringing the best of the past into the present. Armed with a bow, a knife, and his own special set of skills, he’s ready to face the world. Having lost his wife and daughter to the plague, he has no reason to stay where he is, so he moves on.
The author has a knack for building suspense and tension in a story. She also always has an interesting take on the vampire mythos, changing it up between novels so there’s always something original about her creatures of the night. If you’re looking for a vampire novel with a sprinkling of werewolves set in a dystopian sort of setting, then I think you might enjoy The Last Vampire by Kathryn Meyer Griffith. It brings a little of everything – action, adventure, romance and the paranormal – into one tightly written novel.
