In this second entry in this series, James Tiberius Kirk discovers that the Academy is much tougher than he thought — not just because the classwork is hard, but because the competition from the other cadets is unrelenting. Everyone wants to be the best. Kirk has already made his famous declaration to Captain Pike that he can graduate in three years. He still does not know Uhura’s first name. Add to that the fact that cadets are dropping like flies and Kirk finds the Academy is not what he expected. When his closest friend, Leonard “Bones” McCoy is a suspect in an illegal medical enhancement ring, Kirk must prove his friend’s innocence. An engaging storyline pulls in characters and races from the movie as well as the original series. The Andorian Thanas provides an amusing rival to Kirk’s own “access to the ladies.”
One thing I liked very much about this book was the lighthearted nod to catchphrases from the original series. When Bones declared, “I’m a doctor, Jim, not a …,” I laughed out loud. Some of the character traits like Uhura’s need to know and Spock’s fascination with the human race also show up here.
If you are a fan of the series, I suggest The Edge . Even if you are not a fan, you may find yourself so hooked by this book that you will be setting your DVR to tape any episodes you can find.
The Edge is aimed at the teen crowd but I do not think it has a gender bias. There is a romantic interest for Kirk as well as for Uhura. A minor annoyance is that the romance that Kirk is developing here gets totally ignored in the next book. It is hard to have a series written by different authors, but using a story bible cannot be that hard.
