Everyone has heard the tale of Snow White being kissed awake by the Prince and getting her happily-ever-after, but that was the version told to children so they would not have nightmares. The real story is she is kissed by the Prince and she wakes, but she does not wake up Snow any longer. She is now a Zombie Princess with a terrible hunger burning her insides and she needs to eat. She no longer sees her friends who have missed her or her true love.
The dwarfs scatter as Snow rises and begins to feast on whatever is in her way. They run into the Prince’s entourage while escaping to the mine. Chaos ensues since Grouchy has the Prince’s bloody sword and relations between the races are not good. Now prisoners, the dwarfs try to explain about the “horrors” about to come after them all. The Prince’s soldiers learn a little too late what a zombie horde can do.
A small band of survivors containing both races team up and decide to head to a nearby village hoping the local doctor might be able to find a cure. Pursued by the zombie horrors, they soon realize that the plague has somehow gotten ahead of them and they are in for the fight of their lives.
That Risen Snow contains two of my favorite elements: zombies and a fairy tale. It is a totally unique twist of horror and fantasy containing snarky wit and great monologue. Rob E. Boley jumps back in forth in the story giving us some great flashbacks on how Snow came to be with the dwarfs. She is actually a drinking, cursing, smoking wench and fits right in. The Dwarfs come to love her, especially Grouchy who considers himself to be her true love and blames the whole mess on the Prince. I cannot wait to read more of the story.
