Alphas Dare and Silver may have created a couple of miracles, starting with uniting multiple wolf packs, and co-ruling with a female Alpha. However, not every wolf is happy with their leadership, and Silver is about to be tested, not merely as the Alpha, but as a step-mother, and by humanity, when her sanity is tenuous, at best. Silver must hold the packs together until Dare returns from Alaska, and every cockroach that can crawl out of the woodwork does. It is not merely time to be Alpha-strong, Silver must be lady-wise, and as alert as a mother with its young. Because at the end of the day, finding a way to be a mother may just be the most important yet.
Held is starting to settle into her writing like a seasoned veteran, but the third in her Silver series slumps just a tiny bit. It is still an excellent novel, but not as complex or as eccentric as the first two books. This one is more about Silver beginning to reunite her early life as Selena to her current life as Silver, and dealing with common everyday problems. While Dare is gone, pack members display jealousy, insecurity, sexist attitudes, and the most vital and challenging problem Silver has to deal with-being a step-mother to Dare’s daughter.
Like the first two novels, Reflected the title of this story has layered meanings: self-reflection, past reflections, the reflection of stereotypes, the reflection of emulation, making Held one of the most humanistically aware writers I have ever read. She has this refined but multifaceted grasp of human nature, their needs, their drives, and the layers to those desires. She uses this to develop the most brilliant characterizations for her tales that other writers simply miss, but her characters are more human and believable for it. Her books may be urban fantasy but you don’t see that until you come up for air; they have a level of truth which sticks to you like your own genetic code.
