Lost and alone following the 1993 India earthquake, young Shakti finds refuge with a local family but eventually feels the need to flee the only home she has ever known. Arriving in a strange city she is overwhelmed by the traffic and noise. Desperate for a familiar face, she seeks out a family friend that she has not been in contact with for two years. Kriya was quick to take Shakti in and nurture her into a more confident young woman.
Fast forward ten years and Shakti follows Kriya in a career as a flight attendant. Though they live together, their busy schedules mean it is not unusual to go long stretches without seeing each other. When she is awakened early in the morning by the police searching for Kriya, she is stunned and bereft. Her frustration with the police soon drives her into action and she embarks on a dangerous journey in her Quest for Kriya.
I was intrigued with the historical events that were woven into the story and the way the characters interacted during these events. The shift between Shakti and Shiva, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, was a little too jagged and distracting for me. Some descriptions were excessive and felt forced while other times it felt unfinished.
Although the title is Quest for Kriya, our introduction and involvement with Kriya is minimal so a few critical details were missing for me. I did, however, enjoy the transformation of Shakti. When the story opens she is only ten years old but she flourishes into a strong, tough, resilient woman. Her loyalty and determination to find Kriya lead her into some terrifying situations where she is faced with greed, lust and senseless death.
