Penalty Kick by Terence O’Leary

Penalty Kick by Terence O'LearyAs one of the top players and also one of the youngest on his team, Josh lives and breathes soccer. Riding on the adrenaline of a win, he was on top of the world when he got into the car to head home. Waking up in a hospital bed is just the beginning of dealing with the tremendous loss that Josh must face.

When Brooke sees Josh in the hospital, she recognizes the shell-shocked look and decides in that moment to reach out to him. She eventually seeks him out at school and they begin the long and painful journey of coping with the devastating loss.

Inspired by actual events, this beautiful story had me hooked in the first paragraph. Both of these young people are dealing with how unfair life can sometimes be. When we experience a profound loss, it is difficult to comprehend the affect it has on those around us and the way we relate to each other as a result. This is an extremely well-written portrayal of the ripple effect of grief and how these individuals learn to pick up the pieces and begin the healing process. I love how gritty and honest it is without being overdone. The pain is tangible. Penalty Kick is about making mistakes but getting that second chance. It is a terrific story for young adults.

About AJ

Blessed by parents who read to her in the womb, AJ learned to read by the age of 3. She now has an entire room dedicated to reading, with shelves of books stacked to the ceiling, in addition to a stack of books in every room. Her obsession with the written word eventually developed into the desire to write her own stories. Someone saw talent in her and she found work as a Writer/Editor. It was pure heaven. Her husband, who rarely read a book, caught the fever and is now engrossed in another series of books. Passing on the tradition of reading to her child in the womb, her daughter now sleeps in a room with stacks of books surrounding her and just won an award for logging the most reading time in a school with over 500 students.
