Memnoch The Devil by Anne Rice

The Vampire Chronicle Convos: Memnoch the Devil

Memnoch the Devil (Vampire Chronicles, Book 5) by Anne RiceHello again, dear readers.

I have really been enjoying these chats and am particularly excited for this week’s installment: Memnoch the Devil. If you want to check out any of the previous chats you can find them here, here and here. This is all leading up to the release of Anne Rice’s new Vampire Chronicles book, Prince Lestat, and our Halloween giveaway.

Memnoch is easily one of my favorite novels. I vividly remember trying to speed through the pages as a I usually do, but having to slow down because there were so many challenging themes presented. This is one the books that made me actually think; I was an active participant in the narrative, which at the time was a new and exciting experience for me.

I am interested to hear about your experiences with this novel. From various conversations I have had over the years, I find that Memnoch is one of Rice’s more divisive books. So dear readers, did you love or hate Memnoch?

Some other questions to ponder:

If given the chance, would you take the Devil up on an offer for a “ride along?”

Memnoch is a bit of a departure from the other Chronicles, focusing on a more narrative-driven structure vs. action-driven. Did you enjoy that departure?

Do you enjoy different takes on “real-world” theology in your fiction, or do you prefer something totally new in your fantasy reading?

As always, I can’t wait to chat and hear what other readers think about Memnoch. I’ll be around all week, so see you in the comments.

About KristinD

Kristin is loving wife and doggie mom with a serious book addiction. When she is not in the kitchen whipping up a tasty confection (or cocktail) she can usually be found on the couch with her nose in a book. And she really did not hear what her husband just said to her, never mind that she responded… he should know better, she was reading. Her favorite books to read feature vampires, fae, & Gods of any pantheon (oh my!) but she has been known to pick up some pretty heavy philosophical tomes, funny memoirs, and scientific gobblygook. She also has a soft spot in her heart for good high fantasy. She fell in love with Anne Rice at far to young of an age and still has not found her way to NOLA! Kristin also spends time as a foster mom for a herding breed dog rescue in Illinois, indulging her husbands’ “silly” hobby of import/vintage video gaming, and spending as much time as she can with various members of her ridiculously large family. Somehow she manages to work full time in insurance sales but would much rather be having a kitchen dance party.

  1. I’d avoid hanging out with Satan if possible! I usually prefer entirely different worlds in my fiction, though I think authors should have the option to use religious worlds if it’s done well…

  2. I enjoyed Memnoch because it challenged my beliefs in away that had never happened before. I think I was about 16 when I read it. I still really enjoy books that explore all the twists and turns that real religions can take.

However, I also felt like this book ended the series, and there didn’t need to be any more Vampire books. I might still read a few of them one day, but I’m not really planning to.

Maybe depend how tempting the offer will be

I do! I love the “what if” possibilities when there is a real world theology

  5. Yes I enjoy a variety of view points as well as unique / new points of view.

  6. I have to giggle at the thought of a ride along with the devil - in reality I would likely be scared out of my mind, but in theory it could be a heck of a ride :D

  7. I wouldn’t be brave enough to take a ride along with the devil! I enjoyed Memnoch, but it wasn’t my favorite book in the series.

  8. Man taking. A ride with devil with be a thrill ride of a lifetime and I mean that literally
