Scrappy defense attorney Mary Magruder Katz is trying to get her firm the attention it deserves and is off to one heck of a start. Faced with three cases of varying levels of desperation, she finds herself torn between her friend, Judge Liz Maxwell, her boyfriend, Carlos Martin, and a young stranger without anyone to help him. Too many cases with entirely too much intrigue leave Mary unable to determine which way is up. As determined as ever, she swears to see them all through-even if it brings the world down on top of her in the end.
Mary Magruder Katz is an interesting woman. She is feisty and smart, but also beautiful and charming-basically everything a criminal defense attorney needs to be in order to succeed. There were a few moments in the very beginning where I was unsure of her and whether I was going to like her, but before long, I was firmly on her side. That she has the strength to take on three harrowing cases at once made me want to hug her. She is definitely the kind of person you want to have on your side, even if she has a slight tendency to be flaky.
Justice in June is a fast-paced and intense story full of surprises. The action never stops, nor does it even slow down, as Mary and her cohorts jump from case to case trying to solve all three before it is too late. Probably the most interesting case, for me, was that of Luis Corona, because it sadly sounds like the kind of thing that actually could happen in this day and age-being the wrong ethnicity at the wrong time and you can wind up in a lot of trouble. The only thing that bothers me is that Mary believes the only way to win Liz’s case is by doing something illegal to catch the true perpetrator. Although, in the end, it all works out for the best. Justice in June is a great read for anyone looking for a quick and exciting read that does not ever stop.
