Abigail Weston was not altogether happy about the family’s move outside of London, but she knew her father had dreams of being a country gentleman. Since the family had money but no pedigree, Mr. Weston hoped for an advantageous marriage for his daughters, possibly to an earl. Benedict Lennox is everything Abigail, and her parents, could want. Titled, wealthy, and handsome, Benedict does his best to woo Abigail, and even proposes marriage. Unfortunately, her heart was already lost to a completely unsuitable prospect.
Sebastian Vane was once considered a good catch, with money, land, and looks, until an accident during the war sent him home, wounded and broken. Upon discovering that his father had descended into madness and sold off most of the land for a mere fraction of its value, Sebastian became a recluse doing his best to care for his father with limited resources. After his father’s disappearance and accusations of theft from the Lennox family, Sebastian rarely left Montrose Hall. Meeting the lovely Abigail in their shared woods one day left Sebastian conflicted, feeling a strong attraction but knowing he had little to offer.
I loved Abigail’s strong will and determination to discover the truth about Sebastian for herself, rather than to believe the rumors swirling around town. Sebastian also has an awakening and finds in Abigail a reason to keep going in spite of his injury and his tarnished reputation. It Takes a Scandal is an interesting book with endearing characters, and is one I enjoyed very much.
