Jarrod Foster feels as though he is going nowhere. He has a student loan to pay off, but a job he could have done with no high school education. His boss, Ludwig, is a chain-smoking shark, getting all the lousy jobs of hazardous waste removal. Their current job is gutting a decades-old roller rink.
There is a mural in the rink that catches Jarrod’s eye. He swears every time he looks at it, the scenes change. It is really quite disturbing, containing nymphs, mermaids, satyrs and a forest. He comes across a hidden door behind a row of lockers, finding an old arcade inside. Ludwig grudgingly allows him to keep a game called Polybius. After finding bullet holes in the walls, Ludwig recalls the roller rink was the site of a mass shooting.
Jarrod gets the game working and gets sucked into an unbelievable existence. Are his dreams becoming reality or is he getting lost in his dreams? All he wants is to play Polybius. And he knows he is surrounded by demons. Luckily, there is a secret organization that can give him some answers, or make it all go away.
Hazardous Material is a great novella giving us a brief glimpse at one man’s descent into madness. Matthew Quinn Martin writes a good story. This one sucked me in and I was wishing it was longer. He gives us a tease of things to come in later books, and I cannot wait to read more of this interesting universe.
