Harry and Jack are brothers taking their annual vacation flying from England to New York. They are told that there will be a delay in landing since JFK airport is not responding. This causes some concern but most people blow it off. Once they do land, the sights that await them are terrifying. Dead people are laying around haphazardly. A living guard appears and offers to help them, only to shoot the first one off the plane and then kill himself.
Since Harry and Jack have military training they volunteer to scout out the area and find some answers. All they find is death and the insane. The few people that seem immune to this are others who were in flight when whatever it was went down. They have a fellow passenger named Bernie with them and they rescue Lea. The four decide to head out into the country hoping to find fewer crazies to deal with.
They stumble across an organization called the Genesis Alliance. Why are all the members of this group not affected by whatever is happening? Genesis Alliance is not looking for people to help, though. They are just rounding up survivors and shipping them who knows where. The four have a long journey ahead of them if they want to find any answers.
First Activation is a good apocalypse tale. It starts off with a bang with the only sane people left being those on planes, and the survivors are left scared and looking for answers. Jack is a little tortured and seems to be suffering from PTSD, making it harder on Harry to keep them all together and alive. Darren and Marcus give us some compelling characters and a mystery to solve. The book does end on a cliffhanger and I am looking forward to more of Harry and Jack.
