The unthinkable has happened in the small town where Billy lives. When boys start to go missing, the neighborhood responds by posting flyers, putting up fences, changing locks and buying guns. There are a lot more police cars and an early curfew to empty the streets.
Billy Zeets is a young man with a troublesome history, but he promised his mother that he would change his ways. The problem is that the local authorities and townspeople are long on memory and short on forgiveness, so when Billy starts to stumble across clues, he does not think anyone will believe him. Forced to break curfew and press the boundaries of his promise, Billy may have gotten himself into trouble so deep he cannot find his way back.
The story opens with the charming cadence of Billy’s local slang. As he tells his story I was reminded of growing up in the South and running all through the neighborhood until the street lights came on. Tragedy quickly unfolds before I had much chance to become too nostalgic. Compelling, suspenseful and downright terrifying, I could not turn away until the very last page.
Parents be advised that although this is a YA book, there is strong language that may not be appropriate for the younger audience. Ask the Dark deals with some very intense issues but shows restraint in depicting the violence of the crime. It is an amazing read that lingered with me for days.
