Anna Curtis, a sex-crimes prosecutor, has enough on her plate. Having just broken off her engagement, all she wants is a little bit of downtime to wrap her head around everything. But when she gets a call from her hometown informing her that her high school coach has been murdered, she is caught by surprise. She is even more shocked to find out her little sister, Jody, is a suspect. What will it take to get to the bottom of it all? And will the town survive the death of their very own hero?
Anna Curtis is a bit of a mess at the beginning of this book. She has just broken off an engagement with a man she adores, and although she knows she has done the right thing, she is still a bit adrift, trying to find her sea legs, so to speak. As her sister’s needs grow, so does her footing. The more she focuses on Jody and the death of Coach Fowler, the steadier she becomes. She is a woman I would want on my side should I ever wind up in Jody’s shoes. Her relationship with her sister is not always the best, but she really does make an effort and Jody knows it.
On the other hand, I was not always sure I believed or trusted Jody. Despite what she had been through, you always got the feeling that she was not being completely upfront about everything and, to a point, I could not really blame her. As her history is revealed, you begin to understand her and her motivations more. By the end of the novel, however, I wanted to know more of her story and I hope that she comes into play again in the future.
Cooper Bolden, a childhood friend of Anna and Jody’s, was probably my favorite character in this story. Although he does not play as pivotal of a role as Anna or Jody, he is one of those supporting characters that really worms his way into your heart. Also, by the end, he is more of a fixture than he started out to be, and that makes me happy. His sweet self and supportive personality really helped to balance out all the franticness Anna was experiencing. I hope we get to see more of him in the future.
Having never read Allison Leotta before, I was not sure what to expect. I will say that I was not disappointed in the least. A very engaging and well-written mystery, A Good Killing had me hooked from the very beginning. The characters were likable and relatable, something that is a must for me. There were enough hints to keep you thinking you’ ha figured it out even when you had not. I really love it when a story does that for me-tricks me into thinking I know it all only to prove me wrong at the end. Ms. Leotta is a magnificent storyteller and I cannot wait to get my hands on her older books and get up to date on all of Anna Curtis’ adventures.
