Screen Bites: Keeping Us on Our Toes in Suspense: Some Shows Take a Break, One Returns

Posted by Carol Friday March 2, 2012

Watchers, we have a lot to catch up on this time, since I did not post a column last week (my apologies).

Fringe, Friday 9:00 EST, Fox

First, let me say that this show continues to blow my mind, just about every single week. I also want to mention that the last episode was written by David Fury, who was a producer/writer on both Buffy and Angel.

The last two episodes have actually provided us with a few answers. When Olivia was starting to get her memories back, you could see the fear in Peter’s eyes – was he afraid she wasn’t his Olivia, or that she was? I think it was likely a bit of both.

When Olivia was taken from the gas station and woke up in a room with Nina, I was surprised. My notes actually say “WTH?” Then, when they pulled the Nina switch – that got me. So the Nina being questioned by the FBI is the real one, and hopefully the poor woman will now get released.

We learn from the dying Observer that Peter’s baby being born to the wrong Olivia was why he had to be erased. To me, this makes an even stronger case for the timeline he is currently in being the one he thinks he needs to get back to. What do you think?

What were your favorite moments from the last two weeks? Unfortunately, the show is taking a break and won’t return until 3/23.

Supernatural, Friday 9:00 EST, The CW

The poor Winchesters got mixed up with crazy Henry and the demon. I actually suspected Henry from the beginning, but assumed he was already possessed, not that he was a serial killer who wanted the demon back. That was an interesting twist.

But, Watchers – Castiel was in the previews! What do you think this means? (On a side note, if you somehow have insider information, please don’t spoil it here – let’s just have guesses). What else do you think will happen this season? The show returns 3/16.

Once Upon a Time, Sunday 8:00 EST, ABC

I enjoyed finding out Kathryn’s backstory, didn’t you? I was prepared to not like her fairy-tale version very much before learning everything. And speaking of Kathryn – where do you think she is? Possibly in the same place as Belle?

Being Human, Monday 9:00 EST, SyFy

A lot happened for our favorite roomies over the last two episodes.

What did you think about Sally’s mother and that storyline? I loved Josh’s line: “Why am I yet again cooking dinner for people who don’t eat?”

What do you think is going to happen with Henry? Will he be an ally for Aidan, or a problem? Do you think Bishop knew all along that Aidan would not kill Henry?

Josh certainly demonstrates his lone wolf status when he decides to turn in the twins in order to protect Nora. Of course we found out in the last episode that Nora does not want to get rid of her wolf, so it seems that their relationship may be doomed, especially given what happened to Connor at the end.

I’m glad that the tension between Josh and Aidan was alleviated a bit. When Aidan said to Josh, “I asked you to pull me out, not kick me in deeper,” we know he wanted to keep the two aspects of his life separate, and the situation threw him a bit.

What were your favorite moments from the last couple of weeks?

Lost Girl, 10:00 EST, SyFy

Alas, I have been reluctant to watch the very last episode with the spider (it looked way too real to me), so those of you have seen it will have to tell me how often the creature is seen during the show. I do know I’m going to have to watch it eventually, since I imagine the ongoing mystery of Bo’s parents will have been addressed.

The previous episode, where Kenzie got sick, I thought was really good. It was cool to see how much Kenzie means to both Bo and Dyson, making it evident that they have kind of formed their own little family.

How are you enjoying the show?

Being Human, Saturday 9:00 EST, BBC America

*Note: If you have not yet seen the Season 3 finale or this first episode of Season 4, you may wish to skip this section.

I have been waiting for the return of this show, and it did not disappoint me. I was curious to see how they would handle the death of Mitchell, as well as explain Nina’s disappearance (I knew the actress had opted not to return). I am very glad that the two versions of the show differ widely enough from one another that we truly have two distinct stories to enjoy.

So much happened in this episode. We see a future 2037, and realize that George and Nina’s baby plays a huge role. I think this is a pretty cool idea. What about you?

The parallel between the two roommate groups was pretty interesting. I am curious to see how the vampire from that group ends up with Annie and Tom.

The death of George, though wrenching, bothered me in an additional way. When his ghost told Annie that he had to go be with his Nina, I was thinking, “Well, what about your child?” Did anyone else have that reaction?

In spite of the grim nature of this episode, it did have some funny moments and lines. I got a kick out of Tom repeatedly referring to all of the empty rooms in the house.

My favorite funny line was from the kid working for the vampires: “In school I used to run with the asthmatics, but that’s only because they couldn’t run away.”

How do you like the new direction of the show?

Watchers, Eureka returns for its final season on April 13th.

I will be on vacation next week, but a new Screen Bites will return mid-March. Happy viewing!

    Lost Girl

Firstly this episode is literally my worst nightmare. Being trapped in a house with a giant controlling spider.

As for watching, you know how when you watch something you don’t want to see, you squint your eyes so you can still see some of what’s happening (Hopefully I’m not the only one who does that) I had to do that. The spider wasn’t as bad as I thought, but it was bad enough for someone with arachnophobia.
But you should definitely muscle your way through because the episodes are getting better and better.

    BBC Being Human

I just finished watching it and I have to say WOW. That was so very unexpected. It was ridiculously sad with George throughout the episode dealing with Nina and at the end. Bu if he had snapped out of it and paid some attention to his daughter all of that probably wouldn’t have happened like it did.

And the kid with the line about the asthma was my favorite too! And I loved Tom constantly hinting about the rooms.

I have to say I’m a little confused about the storyline about the other ghost, vampire and werewolf.

    Once Upon a Time

For me I figured I’d like the story, I was prepared not to like her. They kept showing her as a spoilled Princess, so I didn’t see that particular storyline coming.

I thought it was intersting that her Prince was the gym teacher.

As for the rest, I have some catching up to do!

    • Carol M. says:

Rae, I do know what you mean about the squinting. :) Actually, I was more concerned about the spider in its “normal” size as they showed in the previews, because that makes it seem more real. I will have to give it a try…

It seems as though Kathryn’s ft character may have been putting on a show when we first met her, perhaps in the hopes that Charming wouldn’t like her.

  2. Supernatural: I was a fan in the beginning then fell out of love, I mean you can only send them to hell so many times LOL! But since they brought in Misha Collins, I got curious and gave it a second chance.

We know Sam and Dean are going to get the best of Henry but why is Castiel back? Hmmm…

first of all –Fringe just keeps us hanging on to Peter being there no matter what time line he is supposed to be in or not. Like before Olivia has powers she can tap into but needs some kind of push to achieve access. (think Walter and the drugs he used to coax it out of her as a child}. But you are right about Peter and his son because of something to do with his DNA. As for Supernatural– I thought that guy who had been possessed got his just desires from the demon’s return served him right. Liked the story in Once upon a Time about Kathryn. On Being Human–finally found the BBC version in time for the new pilot and you are quite right in that the two shows follow a completely different storyline which makes watching both good. Lost Girl is awesome and don’t worry about the spider appearances. It was not as bad as the movie Arachnophobia the spider was half the size and really {if you looked close} looked like a mechanical version.

    • Carol M. says:

Maria Rose, I am hoping there aren’t any scenes of the regualr-size spider attacking anyone — that would be the creepiest, to me. :)

When Fringe returns, I imagine we will learn more, but they do like to keep us hanging, as you said.

  4. Lisa D USA says:

I loved Josh’s comment about cooking and no one eating! I have to agree with you that Nora loves her wolf and that her relationship with Josh is dooomed.
It’s sad that Josh can’t love his wolf.
Salley’s mother seams to be very self centered and a poor excuse for a mother, however that does answer to me why Salley is so clingy.
Aidan is my fave character because he knows what he is and makes no bones about it. He has had alot longer to get comfortable in his skin. I just love this show!!
Hope you enjoy wherever you are going! I’ll try to get caught up on the other shows!

    • Carol M. says:

Thanks, Lisa D. — I did have a great time in sunny Florida. :)

You make a very good point about Sally and her clinginess perhaps being related to her mother’s behavior.

  5. Just got caught up on OUAT and this show just gets better and better. Seems a good possibility that the wicked Queen has Katheryn and Belle in the same place. Loved the Grumpy and fairy story. I’m assuming the wicked Queen is behind August’s book making. Why would she give back to Henry though? Hummm

    • Carol M. says:

Lisa, I have last week’s episode of OUAT still to watch, and then tonight’s. That’s an interesting theory about August.

  6. OMG, I am huge fan of all these shows!!! (Except Eureka) So glad to find this post!!! Okay…

Fringe: LOVE IT! I knew there was something fishing when they grabbed Olivia and she woke up in the room with Nina. I was glad to see my suspicions confirmed. I’m on team–this timeline is the one you’re searching for. Since the other world was always without Peter, this timeline is the only one of the two that was altered to fill the void he left.

Supernatural: Gotta love the Winchesters! I MISS the old demon and angel story line! And I HATE that they wrote out Castiel. Apparently the actor who plays Castiel didn’t even see it coming. From what I heard a new writer was brought in for this season who wanted to get back to what she believes is the show’s roots: a.k.a the first season. Back when it was just the brothers hunting things that go bump in the night on their own–no back, no friends. (hence the death of Bobby and Cas) I stopped watching halfway through the first season all those years ago and only came back when I caught an episode of the next season involving demons. The boys don’t have the same great banter they used to and the hunts seem kind of hokey.

Once upon a time isn’t bad. But I’m not screamin’ at the DVR if it screws up and misses an episode.

Being Human USA: Really enjoying how they’re doing their own thing instead of trying to make a carbon copy of the BBC. There’s something about the BBC version though (a grittiness) that I really like. But I’m officially a fan of both. Just a shot out to future episodes: I’m thinkin’ the Reaper isn’t what he claims to be.

Lost Girl: It’s cute and fun and kinda sexy. Plus there’s nothing else on in that time slot to tear me away. The spider was WAY creepy! They showed it enough that if they bother you, it’s best you skipped it.

Being Human BBC: Honestly, I was hoping they’d bring Mitchell back! I LOVE that actor and I actually like his portal better than the American actor. I’m also really bummed about George and Nina. The truth is, I just wanted the old gang to stay together. :-( I’m not giving up on the show, though! Looking forward to getting to know the new characters and seeing where the show goes in the future!

LOVE THIS POST!!!! Thanks for sharing!!

    • Carol M. says:

Welcome, Paige — thanks for joining us.

As far as Mitchell on the BBC Being Human goes, the actor has a role in The Hobbit, and given the time committment for that, he was unable to continue on the show. Though I really liked the character, I didn’t care for the way they handled his downward spiral in Season 2. However, they may have know even then that they would need to write out the character somehow, and that was what they came up with. I did think his final demise was well-done, in spite of how I did not care for the end of Season 2 trajectory.

I also agree about the grittiness factor, which in many ways kind of fits the setting, I think.

I really do think that Peter is in the place he thinks he needs to find, and I am hoping we will find out definitely sometime soon.

On Supernatural,I don’t care for it when the brothers go their separate ways, but all relationships change somewhat, and given all they have been through, it does affect them. They do always go back to having each other’s backs, though, and working together. I was a huge fan of the angel storyline, and want to see more of it again. I am not a fan of the Leviathans.

So glad you joined us, Paige. :)

  7. Wow…sorry about all the typos! I was all a twitter talking about my favorite shows. LOL
