Author Patricia Briggs Guest Blog and Book Giveaway
So, March 6th, is the day Fair Game appears in bookstores. I always get giddy when the books hit the stands. So far the reviews are good, which is reassuring. While I am writing a book, I am way too close to be an accurate judge of things. A year from now, I will be able to read it and get a better idea, but for now I have to depend upon what other people say – though I have a gut feeling that this is one of my better stories, maybe my best story.
Fair Game is the third of the Alpha and Omega series and takes place directly after the events in River Marked. Yes. That’s right. The two series are now in sinc at last! If you have only been reading the Mercy series, I recommend that you go back and catch up with Anna and Charles because the events of this book will have a huge effect on Mercy and her world.
Traditionally, ever since Cry Wolf, I have a love-hate relationship with the Alpha and Omega books. I have to fight my way to the heart of the story before it starts to sing for me, and sometimes the fight is pretty brutal. With Fair Game, the problem was not with the book, but with our living conditions. As soon as we hired competent people to fix our house, Fair Game wrote itself. There was no mid-book funk, no troubles with characters, just a rip roaring ride to the finish that I hope is as much fun for you as it was for me.

I would like to extend a warm welcome and a HUGE thank you to Patricia Briggs for being with us tonight. She is a very busy lady and with her book coming out in just a few short days we are honored to have a few of her most valued hours of time. So, thank you Patty for being here!

Thank you for having me
I had a great time last year and am looking forward to this.
Very excited about this, very thankful Patty that you chose to be here and answer our questions as fans of your worlds;)) Adelle E USA I sent out a tweet.

How often do you write, and what do you do to get your creative juices flowing?
From an expert to a novice, what advice do you have?
Cheryl K. from the United States
Oh and I did RSVP to this event. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us. I really admire your work, especially because it is so unpredictable; that’s what I believe makes a story worthwhile and amazing. I admire your work so much!
Ideally, I write Monday thru Friday. However the past few years have been — oddly short on ideal weeks For instance, Fair Game I wrote from 5pm until 3 or 4 in the morning because we had (good)contractors working on the house during the day. And I did that seven days a week, because the whole “my house collapsed and we were stupid and hired a bad contractor” thing had thrown me off schedule entirely.
I find that reading good books is an excellent way to recharge my batteries when I’m writing. If that doesn’t work, I watch Lord of the Rings (I have all the editions — Blue Ray extended is the best). Some day that won’t work anymore, so I only bring out the LOR when I am desperate .
LOL Expert. I’m not sure I qualify. I know it’s been given a lot — but read. Read a lot. Go out and live, do things. It’s easier to tell stories when your basket of experiences is full. Enjoy the bad times because those make the best story ideas.
Thank you so much!
I really admire your work, and am so excited I got to ask you questions. I’m so excited!!!!!!
I tweeted three times for this event. So honored to have Mrs. Briggs answer my questions!

Wondering also who you like to read? Any favorite series? Adelle M USA
I read a lot. Recently read/reread in the urban fantasy/ paranormal romance genres: Nalini Singh, Jenna Black, Lilith St Crow, Thea Harrison, Ilona Andrews, Meljean Brook, Lynn Viehl, Kim Harrison — oh and I got to read Benedict Jacka’s Fated before his publication date, it is awesome. Outside of that, I recently discovered Robert Crais (detective novels) who has been writing since the 1980′s. He is terrific. I read Nora Roberts especially when she is J D Robb. Recently loved two of Sarah Monette’s collections of short stories. She is terrific.
I like alot of those authors too, especially lilith stcrow and kim harrison. will have to try out the others as well. I am also a huge Nora Roberts fan! Thanks so much for answering my question. I can’t wait to read the new book and find out how it’s going to change Mercy’s world, kinda nervous lol.;))
Welcome to BBB, Patty! What kinds of things do enjoy doing for relaxation?
(I did RSVP) USA
I read And I have eight horses — two of which are retired. My oldest is 30 this April and I bought him when he was four. At any rate, though I love riding, grooming, feeding and general horse chores are pretty relaxing, too.
Hah. There was supposed to be a grin after the -I read- part of that. I’ve forgotten to beware of emailisms when HTML tags are available.
Wow — 30! That’s pretty ancient for a horse, isn’t it? I have a 24-year-old cockatiel.
Thanks so much fore doing this, Patty!
My question is will we see more of Sam and is there a chance that he might get his own story?
Christy E. USA – RSVP
I am delighted to be here.
Yes, Sam will get his story (his romance with Ariana). At this point it looks like it will be a novella or short story. However I might decided to use him as the major character in a book at another time.
That is great news! I absolutely love Sam!
I can’t even begin to say how excited I am for Fair Game. I think I’ve read all the A&O books about a half dozen times. Thanks so much for doing the Q&A.
I was wondering: who’s your favorite character in A&O? Are they also your favorite character to write for?
Tobi S from USA–I tweeted the link too.
I RSVP’d as well.
Thank you!
Favorite is hard, it’s like having favorite children. It just seems wrong. Charles is the easiest for me to write, though, which is sort of odd since he is a contrary and complicated man. But he’s been like that for me ever since he walked into Moon Called.
Hi,

What do you find is the hardest scenes to write.

Hi Ann
Scenes with lots of people are difficult as are scenes in which there is a lot of information to get from one person to another. Emotional scenes are the easiest, followed by action-heavy parts.
Hi, this is my first time doing anything like this…im so excited to be able to talk with Patty!.
Will we ever get more info on Leah? I find her to be very interesting and i think misunderstood.
+25 rsvp
+1 question
Ah! At last someone who doesn’t hate Leah. Maybe I haven’t been trying hard enough?
Leah is a sad creature. She knows Bran doesn’t love her (he does not lie). She hates and resents the people he does love (like Mercy or Charles). Yes, you’ll definitely hear more from her. Not in Fair Game (except for a cameo). I am working on a book of short stories (that will have most of the short stories set in Mercy’s world that are already published) and five or six new ones. I’m pretty sure that one of them will be focused on either Leah or Bran, which should give her some time on stage.
SOOOO excited to be in on this! I <3 your books!
DO you follow a "formula" when you write? DO you outline your ideas, write in a specific order….or just scribble down thoughts as fast as they come to you and straighten it all out later?
Peggy M
United States
Thank you, Peggy
No formula. No plans. I am not an outliner. When I was in school, you remember how your teacher would make you write an outline — then the research paper? I always wrote the paper, then the outline. The only book I wrote with an outline (Raven’s Strike), the outline took me longer than the book and I didn’t follow it anyway. If I know how the story ends before I start, if the story has no surprises in it for me, then why write the story?
I have been writing long enough so that I can straighten the story out on the fly (no more throwing away a 100 pages because the story dead ended). And in the edits I can do some touch ups and pull some story threads back so they don’t pop up suddenly on page 300 when I had a Good Idea. LOL
well, I bow down & you are my hero! LOL I am hoping some day to have all my “ideas” actually make it out of my head and onto paper!
Will Leslie (mentioned in the prolouge of fair game) be in the book somewhere?

Yes
Leslie is one of the major characters in the book. She has the coolest husband ever (even though he only has a walk-on part). I may have to write a story about them, too.
Hey Patty I’m a huge Mercy Series fan. They are the first books I suggest to friends looking for a series to read. My question is which classical stories and mythologies (if any) influenced your characters, descriptions of fae/werewolves/vampires, and the characters abilities?

Hi, Amanda. Thank you
For me, traditional werewolf/vampire cannon comes mostly out of the comic books and B horror movies up until the mid 70′s. Which was the point, at about ten, that I decided I knew what werewolves and vampires were. I don’t follow all the “rules” but if I don’t, I give the rules a nod — as when in Blood Bound, Stefan drove Mercy across the Columbia. Tradition says that evil cannot cross running water. Stefan can — therefore tradition is wrong in my world.
The fae owe a lot to the old Fairy Tales of Grimm and Andrew Lang — but also to the wonderful research done by Katherine Briggs (no relation) in the 60′s and 70′s, most notably “An Encyclopedia of Fairies”. My mother was an elementary school librarian at my elementary school. Before I was in fourth grade I had read every fairytale book in her library. When I’m writing a new fae character, I shake up the bits of stories in my head and reach in to see what I can find — grin.
Thank you so much! I love your werewolves the most. I like the fact they are immortal, for lack of a better word, like vampires. So many wolves are simply long lived but the immortal ones off set the advantages of vampires and fae.

My one friend introduced your books to me, and another friend of mine is breezing through your books! Though I am ashamed to admit that I am behind! Gotta say I love Warren’s character.
Who was the inspriation for Warren?
Total 29
LOL
First, I’d like to point out that I wrote Warren before I’d ever heard about Brokeback Mountain.
Warren was written, initially, to fill a need. I had a wounded Adam I needed to find a safe place for. It had to be with someone dominant enough to protect him — but no one who could become Alpha if he was killed. My werewolves, like the real wolves, will sometimes kill a leader they think is too weak to protect the pack. Who could be dominant enough that the pack wouldn’t want to mess with him, yet not have a chance at being Alpha?
The answer I came up with was Warren. He grew, very quickly, into my favorite of Adam’s pack. He reminds me of a lot of the cowboys I grew up knowing — and Kyle is a wonderful foil for him. Writing “In Red with Pearls”, the short story told from Warren’s point of view, was a lot of fun. It let me bring out some things that Mercy doesn’t know about Warren — like his bone-deep practicality.
So Warren wasn’t based on anyone I knew specifically, though I admit that he reminds me of some of the old cowboys I grew up with, like my old riding teacher’s husband, who was in his 70s and 80′s when I knew him back in the 1970′s and 80′s.
Hi there!! I have not read this series yet, just the mercy books, but I do have them sitting right here soon to be at the top of my tbr list. I think I’ll push them up so I can be ready for the new release. I have listened to the mercy series also. I was wondering if there was a reason at the change of narrator for the A&O series? I mean I know it’s a different series, but being based in the same “world”, I love the job Lorelei did, (portraying different characters), and just wondered if this was based soley on being a different series.

Yes, I love Lorelei King, too. I first heard her when I picked up the Janet Evanovich audiobooks, and asked for her when Ace started to do the Mercy books in audio.
Holter does a magnificent job, too. The A&O books are third person viewpoint books, so the decision was made to have them read by a different person (to avoid confusion with the first person Mercy books).
I have to admit that my favorite of the audiobooks that they made from my stories are the Dragon Bones/Dragon Blood books narrated by Joe Manganiello.

I want to first say how much I LOVE your books. I picked the first Mercy book up at my local library, and haven’t looked back since. The Alpha and Omega books are wonderful also. I like many fans have been waiting for Fair Game. I was just wondering, how do you keep track of all the characters? As an author, do you find yourself having to “reread” your own books to remember where the characters “left off.”? Your books just flow so well, I was just wondering if you keep an outline, etc.? Thanks for your time.
Thank you
I have a very good memory which served me until I hit book three. I was getting ready to put together a notebook of information — when a wonderful bunch of people on my website who have put together a section of the Hurog Forums called Mercy’s World Cannon, wherein these lovely folk have collected the information scattered throughout the books and organized it for easy reference. What can we expect from Isaac Owens?.. good Alpha, bad Alpha or somewhere in the middle?
Oh, you’ll like Isaac, I promise you.
COOL….even tho i only got a small glimpse of him in the sample chapters…i got the feeling that he was going to be intersting…i mean who sit on top of a wagon…im public!!
also curious if you have any plans for Jesse as she grows up, do you think you will ever write her as being more of a main player? Adelle M USA
Ah plans. I don’t know. Who comes to the forefront in which book is dependent upon the needs of the book, which, since I am a pantzer (as opposed to an outliner I won’t know until I get there. I like Jesse, she’s tough and smart — and holds her own. I will probably write a short story for her along the way, if nothing else. She plays a fairly big role in the early chapters of Frost Burned, which is the book I’m working on now.
OHHH Frost Burned??? is that the 7th Mercy book?
2nd question: Do you find it difficult to write in 3rd or first person? Which point of view is easier for you to write?
Total 29
Either 3rd or 1st works for me. Third is less restrictive — for example: Samuel’s romance with Arianna in Silver Borne was really difficult to tell from Mercy’s viewpoint. 1. Mercy is not a voyeur. 2. She was gone during most of the time that the romance took place. So in that sense, third is easier.
What is difficult is switching between them — but it also refreshing. Doing the A&O books between the Mercy books has kept me from feeling like I’ve been writing the same book since I started Moon Called.
Patty….I must know….Will the Mercy series become a movie? I have been hearing lots on the subject.
LOL I’d love to know the answer. I don’t know. The movie rights are sold. There are mysterious things happening — very slowly — that might or might not mean anything. If nothing else, I’ve had a lot of fun finding out things about the movie industry!
(I have to ask it….)
Did the capture [at long long last] of James “Whitey” Bulger and his moll have any effect on the book? (Bulger being the fellow who made complete chumps out of the Boston FBI office, for decades, until various (natural) deaths and retirements of the crooked agents who were his handlers. He was #1 on the FBI Most Wanted List for years, and had been tipped off in enough time to flee, when all the overlooking and paid off agents were no longer in control in the Boston office anymore. City and state police tried for decades to nail him, but the feds tipped him off every time. He’s not leaving jail alive–one of the people he ratted on, ratted on him, and literally knew where the bodies were buried…)

Ah — that’s another story in and of itself, isn’t it?
The people I met in the Boston Violent Crimes unit were smart, dedicated and overworked. I gained a lot of respect for them and the job they do — and none of them had been there long enough to be among the problematical agents .
And I didn’t really answer the question, did I? LOL
I didn’t put it in. Fair Game isn’t about the Boston FBI (though some of the agents are main characters), and I thought it would distract attention from the story without adding anything to it.
Will there be another book after Fair Game? I know it just came out but im always looking ahead!!
Probably, though not soon. I have three Mercy books under contract (including the one I’m working on) and a book that takes place in Mercy’s world. That last might be an Alpha and Omega book — but I might do something else with it to keep me fresh — Grin.
Will there be more conversations between Ana and Brother Wolf, and/or Charles and Ana’s wolf
Yes. Brother Wolf and Anna do a lot of talking in Fair Game. Anna’s wolf isn’t quite as much of her own person as Brother Wolf is, so she doesn’t talk to anyone in quite the same way.
Ohh…im so excited to have you answer my questions….Thank you so much for being here Patty!
So Sam is a great character on of my faves…im glad to hear that he will have a short of his own…tho i would just love a whole book about him and his romance with Ariana.
In Fair Game…will Anna learn more about what it means to be an Omega? (things Asil doesnt know)
USA
Not so much in Fair Game. There is a bit, but not much.
Will the issue about the goverment wanting to classify the werewolves as an endangered species be in fair game?
Yes. And the larger issue it represents (how the government is reacting to the werewolves and fae et al) is a major point of the story.
Is Charles the alpha of the British wolves since he killed Arthur who was the alpha of all the wolf packs in Britain.
He He He. No. And he should be, but the UK doesn’t fall under the Marrock’s control and no one is anxious for that to change. His second took his place.
that would have been so cool if he did….then Bran would (in a way) control Europe as well!!
i lost count and im sure i was doing it wrong anyways….if the hostess wants to count for me that would be AWESOME!! thanks.

The real answer is because Charles grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and told me his story and Samuel hasn’t done that yet.
My husband would be unhappy with the woowoo factor in that answer though, so I’ll give you the answer that would satisfy him. Charles doesn’t live in the same town as Mercy, so it makes it easier to have a series separate from Mercy’s.
Bran is more fun when I know more than you do about him. And also he is somewhat of a tragic character at this point — and I write happy-ending books.
Thanks again for the chat and answering my questions, have a great night!
