The Second Time Around
It has been a long journey to get to this date, November 8, 2011, when the second book in the AS THE WORLD DIES zombie trilogy, Fighting to Survive, finally hits the bookstores. Long ago when I typed out what I thought was a short story and posted it online, I never dreamed it would evolve into a three book series. It never occurred to me that the story about two Texas women, Jenni and Katie, forming a strong friendship as they struggle to survive the zombie apocalypse would end up making my dream of becoming a published author come true.
For those of you who don’t know my history, the story originally started online as a serial and ended up with a large following. I split the massive story into three books and self-published the series with the help of my husband to satisfy my fandom’s desire to see the story in book form. The First Days: As the World Dies sold thousands of copies, drew the attention of a producer in Hollywood and was picked up by genre giant, Tor, for publication. (You can read about my path to publication here.)
The First Days: As the World Dies was released on July 5, 2011 to very positive reviews. It even received a starred review from Publishers Weekly. A friend and I drove to the nearest bookstore and stared at the copies on the shelf with something akin to awe. With a trembling hand, I signed all the copies in stock and watched as a store employee placed little stickers on the cover announcing they were autographed copies.
Now I’m facing the second release date of my writing career with Tor and I’m so excited. I feel much more at ease this time around despite the fact that my second book is technically my sophomore outing. Since I self-published the original series, my experience has been different from a lot of other authors. I did not sell the series on the merits of just the first book, then have to face the challenge of writing the two remaining books in the trilogy. All three were already written. But I did have to face the fact I was going to have to revise the last two books.
An online serial is not that easy to chop apart into three books and have all the book standalone. My editor, Melissa Singer, was an enormous asset in helping me shape Fighting to Survive into a novel that can stand on its own merit without a someone having to read the first book, The First Days: As the World Dies. Of course it is better if you start at book one, but book two is a great story unto itself. I built on the bones of the original self-published version, trimming away the extra fat and fleshing out the plot lines and characterization in a more dynamic way. I was able to fix things that had always bothered me about the first version, but I was afraid to change anything for fear of upsetting the original fans of the serial. I found liberation in the revision process and Fighting to Survive became a much better book because of it.
I thought the sophomore book of the series was going to be the toughest one, but I was wrong. It ended up being the part of the story where I feel I did some of my best writing in the series. Jenni and Katie’s adventure is now an even better read and I am immensely proud of the work I did.
I hope that people will pick up my books and not only enjoy the zombie mayhem, but the compelling tale of two very different women and their amazing friendship as they fight to survive the end of the world.
My questions to the readers:
- Who are your favorite pair of female friends from books, movies, or TV?
- If the zombie apocalypse happened, which three people from your life would you want at your side and why?

Hi Rhiannon!
I met you at the WLT workshop you did. It was great – thanks!
I’m going to answer your question #2 “If the zombie apocalypse happened, which three people from your life would you want at your side and why?”
I would want my husband Gary by my side because I love him, he’s strong, and knows how to use guns. I mean his AR15 has a metal name plate on it that reads, “Zombie Killer,” so duh!
{It really does!}
The second person would be Erica – my best friend for over a quarter of a century! I’d want her because she’s always been there for me through thick and thin, she provides humor in all situations, and we think alike so I wouldn’t even have to say, “Shoot that zombie over THERE!” as she would see him first and know to shoot!
I’m not sure about a third person, but I’m thinking my fav country singer Trace Adkins. Why? Because he’s tall, muscular and a “country boy can survive” so he too can shoot, stab, get them zombies! Plus, being a “country boy,” he’s resourceful – as in finding/killing food and whatnot, and I think that would definitely be a handy trait.
Melinda, I like your three! They make sense to me! I’m so happy you enjoyed the WLT workshop. I had a lot of fun that day, too.
First of all, I have to say that I loved, loved, loved The First Days: As the World Dies!
I’m sure people have gotten sick and tired of me talking about it. Of course now everybody will have to listen to me about this one.
1. Who are your favorite pair of female friends from books, movies, or TV?
-It’s poissibly because I just read it, but I really like the banter between Kallie and Bella from Adrian Phoenix’s Hoodoo series.
2.If the zombie apocalypse happened, which three people from your life would you want at your side and why?
-Well I would definitely want my sister because she’s a doctor. Those are always on short hand when the zombiepocolypse happens. My old neighbor would be my second choice. He can build stuff and I’m pretty sure he can shoot a gun. You can never have too many people that can shoot a gun. And I’m not sure who my third would be. Everyone else tends to lead towards panicky!
I’m curious, do you have details about the characters or world that never make it into the story? Any you care to share?!
Oh and by the way, you have awesome book covers!
Thanks and can’t wait to read this!

Rae,
You better make sure your sister wears heavy duty armor at all times! First responders will be the first to go in a zombocalypse. She would be like a god if she could survive.
There is a lot of information about the characters and world that never make it into my books. It has to be pertinent to the main plot, or it doesn’t make it into the story. I have been releasing AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES for the fans for a few years on my forum and the first compilation was published this summer. I’ll probably do two more. These are stories about the secondary characters in the series that I want to share.
Rhiannon
I have a question for you Rhiannon! You wrote above that this novel is not only about zombies, but is “the compelling tale of two very different women and their amazing friendship as they fight to survive the end of the world.”
Even though your writing isn’t a genre I usually read, one of the reasons I am compelled to read it is your statement above. I write women’s fiction, so I definitely enjoy reading about female friendship and the struggles that friends face together.
Did you base the friends’ personalities and/or relationship on you and a friend of yours or on another set of friends you know or?
Melinda,
Though my books have zombies (and plenty of them) and some very exciting action scenes, at its core it is the story about Jenni and Katie and their friendship. Though neither one of the ladies is based on me or my friends, I do have some very strong female relationships that are very important to me. My best friend, Dru, has been extremely important in my life and I would want her at my side during the zombocalypse. I am pleased that a lot of people love the portrayal of the friendship that forms between Jenni and Katie as they survive together.

Who are your favorite pair of female friends from books, movies, or TV? Thelma and Louise. Circumstances put them in a situation that spun out of control and they stuck together until. the very end
If the zombie apocalypse happened, which three people from your life would you want at your side and why? My daughter- she is strong and smart and will fight to survive. My 2 sons- I would need their strength and loyalty to keep me going. And I would have to have 4, My husband for his non-emotional decision making.

Sandy,
The trick to keeping characters interesting throughout the series is to make sure they are realistic. All my characters are flawed to some extent and don’t always do the right thing (though they may want to). Katie and Jenni are such strong individuals and their impact on the people and situations around them keep things dynamic.

1. Who are your favorite pair of female friends from books, movies, or TV?
It’s really awful that this is taking so much thought. One thing I’ve always found frustrating is how women are often portrayed as hateful to one another or in constant competition. This is gonna sound awful but I’m having such poor luck thinking of any that I’m going to go with Alice & Bella from Twilight. Gag, I know. But when I read the books Alice was why I kept reading. I loved how she pulled Bella out of her comfort zone and yet stood by her in any way she could. I need a friend like that.
2.If the zombie apocalypse happened, which three people from your life would you want at your side and why?
Since they must be from my life I would choose my hubs and our two children. Our son who is almost 12 had a huge zombie fear for years but we gave him our copy of The Zombie Survival Guide to read and it’s helped to the point he has planned how to make our home zombieproof. lol
Plus my toddler is already a biter… I’d rather have her on my side than theirs.
Congrats on the new release Rhiannon!

I totally agree with you about how women and their relationships are often portrayed in media. I was glad to avoid the stereotype and portray a more realistic friendship between Jenni and Katie.

2a) How have I not read this book yet? Seriously. (not counting towards points)
2b) Is this series an apocalyptic setting or one where the zombies are contained for the most part? (Do they still have essential services that a Texan would be used to?)
2c) Slow Zombies or Fast Zombies?
3) http://twitter.com/#!/Zombie_Joe/status/134027424248766466
4) No B&N option any more?
5) 5 points (including bonus for doing my own math)
Seriously, how am I just now finding out about this? Oh yeah, my TBR pile fell on me and it took a month or so to dig my way out.
Would be sending in proof of purchase, but I am a rogue and have a Nook, not a Kindle.
Joe,
Glad you finally did hear about my series! As for the zombocalypse in the book, it is a world-wide event with no containment…unless you count the humans building walls to protect themselves. As for essential services, the Texans have their sheer cussedness, guns, and frontier spirit. Since it is in Texas where we have a whole lot of guns, I had to make the zombies fast at first, but they significantly slow down as they basically wreck themselves trying to get to human flesh. Since they don’t feel pain, they’re prone to pulling off pieces of themselves as they wander through Texas.
Rhiannon
Well now I’m curious what three people from your life would you want with you during the zombiepocolypse?
Rae,
My three peeps are my hubby, best friend, and my mom. I think we’d make a formidable team. Mom is a very good shot and my best friend is ruthless. My husband is very methodical in his observations and he’d be great at planning.
Rhiannon
Oh yeah, the two questions for us. Whoops.
Favorite Pair from Television or Movies?
That’s like asking who my favorite author is, or asking me to pick which child/grandchild is my favorite. Not to mention my “favorites” tend to be the ones I am watching at the time. Currently, that would be Two Broke Girls. But that could just be due to the fact that I like me some snark.
Three People
So I get to choose my three, huh?
First I would have to go with my wife. Zombie outbreak is pretty much the definition of “for better or worse.” Also she is a pretty good shot and is better with tools than I am. She would be perfect dystopian companion if she could dress and butcher a deer.
Second would then have to be our neighbor and one of my gaming friends. She has a green thumb so could keep a garden going, and knows how to take care of animals. She has also expressed an interest in hunting this season and assures me she could field dress a deer if we show her how.
Now I suppose I could be nice and name my third as her boyfriend, but I have to go with my 20 year old son. He’s a good shot and would catch on quick to the rest of it. Also, from a young age I knew I was the last person to hold our family name. That meant I always wanted to carry it on. So having him near me learning how to survive gives my family name a chance. Without me, he’d probably be a shambler.
I really, really loved The First Days and cannot WAIT to continue the series!!
1) Who are your favorite pair of female friends from books, movies, or TV? That’s easy: Buffy and Willow!!! I loved them together:)
2) If the zombie apocalypse happened, which three people from your life would you want at your side and why? I would have to say my 3 kids, although to be honest, I really don’t think 2 of them would be much help at all in the apocalypse!! Gotta take em all, though, I guess!! lol

Hi Rhiannon! Congratulations on your latest release.
Until very recently I had never read a zombie or apocalypse story. I have heard of them but never ventured into their world reading-wise. Then I read a zombie post-apocalypse story (it was indie too) and I really enjoyed it. I’m now looking for more reads like these and your books sounds great. It sounds like the character’s friendship will take them far. Thanks for the interview.
My favorite pair of female friends would be the Sweet Valley twins. They shared so many adventures and up and down moments together. Sister and best friends that entertained me for so many years.
