Feisengrad was a difficult book to rate. Brave New World is one of my favorite novels, and 1984 always leaves me deep in thought. I did not enjoy Animal Farm as much as the others, but Feisengrad was different for me. I feel it was more crass, and at times almost “too clever,” but the author did a good all-around job of setting up Feisengrad’s world and life.

Feisengrad was not born, he hatched from an egg. The world he hatched into is not a pleasant one, and a rather confusing one filled with rules and sayings. That by itself would not make it odd except for the fact that these Plow7s (humans/workers/lower class) do not know what the sayings mean, only to say it. For the outside reader looking in, we understand where these come from, and when and where to use them, but Feisengrad’s people, the Plow7s, do not have any idea. The other interesting thing is that their time does not work like our time. They have days broken up into a week, but Feisengrad ends up getting a job, quitting, getting a new job, grows mostly up, has a sister and his grandmother dies all within one day.

The satirical portion of this book is the government, how the newspapers are all run by the government, the religions are broken up into the Coughs and Sneezes and there really isn’t any real food. There’s a war going on where people fight, die and come back home, but no one really knows who it is against or what it’s about. Parts of this book were very well written, it was creative and cunning. Most of the book though focused so much on how to be clever, and what abstract thread can be connected where, that it was almost too comical for me. People who love crude jokes and coarse satires will have a ball reading about Feisengrad’s first love and ultimately his life. Enjoy.
