Wasteland by Lynn Rush
Recently released from two hundred and fifty years in solitary confinement for failing to complete his last mission, David is irritable and uncomfortable with the people in the crowded bar, tempting his inner demon, and with Gage, who had been sent by The Master to keep tabs on him. Attempting to block Gage’s taunts while focusing on the dancing women, searching for the Mark he was supposed to deliver, required every ounce of control David possessed, and though his attention was captured by one particular woman, he quickly pushed her out of his mind. Well aware that succumbing to the temptations in front of him would mean the loss of his humanity, David nearly lost control when a group of women surrounded him and began touching him, and he was startled when the woman he had admired earlier pulled him from the crowd and began a conversation that was interrupted all too soon by her brother, Russell.
When David realizes that Beka and Russell are not human, angelic, nor demonic, he concludes they must be either Hunters or Guardians, which had the potential to seriously complicate his mission. Russell has sensed David’s demonic half, though Beka has not, and he wonders exactly why they are in the same bar he had been sent to. Being a runner for the Master is a thankless task, a constant battle for control, knowing that one small error could mean the end of his humanity and condemn him to a life of darkness. If he fails once again, the punishment will be brutal. Is David willing to risk everything for Beka and her promise of possible redemption, or will he deliver the Mark, as ordered, to the Master?
I sympathized with David’s situation, being caught between worlds with no way out of his prison until Beka offered him a chance for freedom. David’s tendency to look for the darkest possible reason behind everything was logical, considering his mother had sold him, her first-born, to the Devil, and he was well-accustomed to hidden meanings and the worst possible scenarios. Beka’s strength, courage, and determination to locate Jessica Hanks and keep her safe was admirable, and I appreciated her willingness to do whatever needed to be done in order to successfully complete the mission. This was an interesting and exciting story that put the constant battle between good and evil on a personal and more human level, and I enjoyed it very much.
