Black Heart Loa by Adrian Phoenix

PLEASE NOTE: the contest portion of the Adrian Phoenix event is now closed. The winners will be chosen at a later date and notified via email.

“An eye for an eye is never enough.”

Kallie Rivière, a Cajun hoodoo apprentice with a bent for trouble, learned the meaning of those ominous words when hoodoo bogeyman Doctor Heron targeted her family for revenge. Now, while searching for her still-missing bayou pirate cousin, Kallie finds out the hard way that someone is undoing powerful gris gris, which means that working magic has become as unpredictable as rolling a handful of dice.

The wards woven to protect the Gulf coast are unraveling, leaving New Orleans and the surrounding bayous vulnerable just as the deadliest storm in a century is born.

As the hurricane powers toward the heart of all she loves, Kallie desperately searches for the cause of the disturbing randomness only to learn a deeply unsettling truth: the culprit may be herself.

To protect her family and friends, including the sexy nomad Layne Valin, Kallie steps into the jaws of danger . . . and finds a loup garou designed to steal her heart—literally.

Hi! I haven’t started this series yet, but I really like the Maker’s Song books!
Are you ever in the middle of writing for this series, and find yourself thinking, ‘that sounds like something Dante/Heather/yougettheidea would say’?
Do you write both series at the same time, or can you only work on one at a time?

    • Hi Bethany,
No, that hasn’t happened, but I have had a few instances of “Man, if Dante or Von were here at this moment, they would say this about the situation.

Right now, I’m only working on one book at a time (deadlines and focus. LOL.)

      Thanks for the questions!

  2. connery says:

wahoo! first one!! okay, maybe not by the time i finish this…well, first off, adrian…AWESOME JOB AGAIN!! i love the chemistry between the characters and it kept me on the edge of my seat…question: do we get more back story? still have some questions about, well, i can’t say them here, but you get my drift…

    ROCK ON, ADRIAN!!!

    • Hey, thanks so much, Conn! I’m glad you’re here and the champagne is much appreciate! ;) I’m really glad you’re enjoying the book!

There’s a bit more back story, yes. But there will be even more in future books.

  3. Na S. (Canada) says:

Hi Adrian. The cover for Black Heart Loa is very eye-catching. I loved it.

I have a question, I noticed the heroine Kallie is a hoodoo apprentice. For me that is quite a unique “occupation”. Where did you get the idea from? Was it from a TV show, another characters inspired it or something else entirely?

    RSVP’ed

    • Thanks for joining me, Na S.

I got the idea from my study of Louisiana and the culture. Hoodoo is a system of folk magic (as opposed to Voodoo, a religion) in the South and elsewhere. And something I’ve always been fascinated with.

      • Na S. (Canada) says:

That’s wonderful. I think your study of Lousiana and the culture will really show in yours books. It will give it a more authentic feel.

  4. Ang says:

I know you have been asked in the past what your favorite scenes to write were, but I’d like to know what was your least favorite scene to write was in BLACK DUST MAMBO. I would ask about your least fav in the whole series but since BLACK HEART LOA just came out today, we wouldn’t want any spoilers..LOL

    • Hi Ang,
Thanks for being here! least favorite scene? Hmmm. To be honest, I can’t really think of one. If I hated writing a particular scene, I would re-work it until I liked it. Or change it completely. So no least favorite scenes. If I don’t like a scene, I sure wouldn’t expect my readers to like it.

Or did you mean least favorite as in emotionally painful or difficult for the character?

      • Ang says:

Well,l maybe I did mean that..LOL..not enough coffee for me today, I guess. I could see where you would re-write something you didn’t like, so yeah what was the most difficult scene emotionally painfully or difficult for you to write?
And by the way…You rock and so do all of your characters!*smiling*

        • Some of the scenes with Dante and Chloe as kids choked me up. So did the scene in A Rush of Wings in the slaughterhouse with Jay. Also, at the end of In the Blood, when Dante finally remembered what he had done to Chloe. Sheesh, there are a bunch that are emotionally difficult and they all seem related to Dante. LOL.

In BDM, I think the scene where Layne washes Gage’s body, then dresses him is tough too. And in BHL, Jackson’s memories about his family made my heart ache.

          Hugs!

Any chance that you will reduce the multiple POV and just show us the main character’s POV instead?

    • Jenna says:

Oops!! I had RSVP with my yahoo email add and not the current one.. xp

      Does it still counts?

    • Hi Jenna,

So wonderful to “see” you again! Thanks for helping me celebrate!

No, I don’t think that’ll ever happen with either series. I’ve already established multiple POVs, so I need to stick with that.

Now once I do some Hoodoo short stories, those will definitely be in one POV only.

I’m also planning another series (Supernatural meets Sons of Anarchy meets Call of Cthulhu) and I’m planning on having only two POV for that one.

I have several times of time that are better for writing than other times: early morning, before my conscious brain starts overruling my dream-laden subconscious; early afternoon when I’m bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (odd, considering I’m not a shifter. Or am I?) and late evening. It seems that late afternoon/early evening is sleepy nap time and my brain shuts down.

All seasons are good for writing. No favorite there.

    • Hi Lea-Ellen, I appreciate you joining my celebration!

At this point, the Hoodoo series is open, no set number of books planned. I have tons of adventures in mind for Kallie and her friends.

Both of my series are actually urban fantasy and not PNR, but even so, both series have a main male protagonist and a main female protagonist that are in each book of the series. The books don’t have a new hero/heroine in them, though I often introduce new characters. I don’t have any plans at this point to write a series that offers a different hero/heroine in each book.

I do have pets! I have three kitties: Amiga, Diabla, and Ember. They are indoor only kitties (I had two indoor/outdoor cats killed by stray dogs that got in my yard), but I take them out in the back yard every evening for supervised exploring/play time.

      Thanks for the questions!

+1 From your bio, it says you live in Oregon. Is there anything in that region that has inspired your writing to the degree Louisiana has?

Truthfully, not really. Maybe the Oregon coast, but no. That’s why my stories keep ending up in Louisiana. LOL.

+1 How annoying is it for someone who has studied voodoo to see Hollywood’s depictions of it? Is it cringe-inducing or do you just take it as entertainment and little more?

I generally see it as entertainment, but I wish they could be a little more accurate. They mix up hoodoo and voodoo all the time, and usually cast both in a very negative light.

+1 What are the chances of seeing Kindle editions of your work?

All of my books are already available on Kindle and Nook and e-readers everywhere. :)

  20. Rachel S/Rachel498 says:

    Hey Adrian!

Happy release day! I downloaded Black Heart Loa and I can’t wait to start reading. Is the Hoodoo series more challenging to write than the Maker’s Song series? And who is your favorite character to write about in Kallie’s world? Thanks and I’ll see you over at the Club! As usual, please give Von a kiss for me ;)

    • Hey Rachel! So wonderful to have you here! I SO appreciate your support!

Actually, the Hoodoo series is a lot easier to write than The Maker’s Song. It doesn’t have all the complicated sub-plots (which I love doing, don’t get me wrong). It has more humor to it as well.

All of the characters are fun to write about, I love exploring Kallie and Layne’s very different backgrounds, but Belladonna and Augustine crack me up. And I love writing about all of Dallas’ bedroom fantasies. ;)

See you in Hell! And I’ll have Dante pass your kiss along to Von. ;)

I’m currently finishing up book 5 of The Maker’s Song series, On Midnight Wings.
      2. What do you do to celebrate every time you have a new book release?
I try to go out to dinner with friends, but if nothing else, I have a glass of wine. Or two. All right, maybe three. ;)

      3. What was the last book that you read?
Rob Thurman’s awesome Cal Leandros series. I’m reading book 5, ROADKILL for the second time right now.

  23. Hi Adrian,
I love these books (and the Maker’s Song books, too!) and as of 12:01 this am, I have Black Heart Loa on my Kindle. My question … Layne is such an interesting LOOKING character with his height and blond dreads. Do you use real people as the basis for your character’s appearance, or at least some of them? Or is it all just in your head?

    Thanks for the great books!

    • Hi D.B! I’m so glad you could join the celebration! I know you’ve got a deadline fast approaching for your latest Vampires in America novel (must reads, y’all)!

I hope you enjoy BHL. I didn’t use a picture as a guide for Layne’s looks aside from one I found of a man with waist-length blond dreads seen from the back only. Otherwise, Layne’s looks were imagination-inspired.

I come up with the character first, then I go through my file (meaning, pictures torn from magazines and tossed in a drawer) for someone who might look like them. For Basil Augustine, that was Rupert Everett.

For Belladonna and McKenna I found pictures of people in ads who I thought worked well for them.

Other characters remain in my head.

      Thanks and hugs!

    Hi,

When you write, do you sit down for a couple of hours and dedicate the time or do you have bursts of inspiration and then write?

    Jenn

    • Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed A Rush of Wings and In the Blood!

My writing is my livelihood, so I need to treat it like a regular job with regular hours. To meet my deadlines, I need to write a certain number of words each day. How many depends on the length of the novel and how long I have until deadline.

But being a writer, my mind is always composing. I’ll be doing a chore and a perfect phrase will pop into my head and I’ll scurry to my office and add it in real quick. Or I’ll be walking my granddog and a plot problem unknots and I hurry home to my computer.

I think as a writer, you are ALWAYS writing, no matter where you are or what you’re doing.

      Thanks!!

      • Jennifer Morrell says:

        Hi,
Another author was talking about titles. Do your titles come first, before you write, or when just whenever the hit you?
I teach college comp. and I try to get them to be creative with the title. “Final Paper” is just not good enough. The title is the first thing that catches a reader’s eye, unless they are dedicated readers of that author. I have a lot of those. They just do not get it, any suggestions I can pass on about how to get the perfect title, or even one that is not the title of the assignment? (ugh)

        Jenn

        • I generally come up with a working title and find the true title somewhere in the story itself. My first novel, A Rush of Wings, was originally The Fallen, then I pulled a line from the story that seemed to be at the heart of things: A Rush of Wings.

That is my recommendation to your students. Find a word or phrase in the body of the work that sums it up, that is its heart.

          Hope that helps!

Wonderful to have you joining my celebration! I hope you enjoy BDM and BHL. :)

My favorite aspect of New Orleans is the vibe, the way the place feels. It feels very alive, yet haunted, and the French Quarter feels like I’m walking in the past. Just love it! The food and the people are great too.

I would love to have an apartment in the French Quarter, a place for spring and fall. (Too hot in the summer.) The Garden District is beautiful too. But I don’t think I could ever afford a place there. LOL.

I moved to Oregon from Idaho when I visited friends who had moved there. It was so green and lush and vibrant (and close to the coast), so I stayed.

      Thanks for your questions!

Thanks so much for the reply. Although I’ll be sad to see another Oregon author go, I hope you’ll get your wish and be able to move out there :)

Hi! This book sounds so awesome! I don’t recall any other PNR books written around hoodoo, so my question is, are there any that you know of? And also, some writers say they have little routines when they write: whether they listen to music or not, what kind of music, where they write, etc. Do you have any routines when you write?
