Feast: Harvest of Dreams PLEASE NOTE: The contest potion of the Merrie Destefano event is now closed. The winners will be chosen at a later date and notified via email

If you could turn back the hands of time

I love world building and creating new characters. I especially enjoy using myths and legends to put a new spin on an old monster. All of these were things that I got to do while writing my new book, Feast: Harvest of Dreams. Surprisingly, one of my favorite parts of the process was deciding what supernatural powers my new creatures would have. I already knew that they had come from another world, that they could fly, and they harvested human dreams.

But beyond that, it was all up to me.

So, I created a world system where my Darklings used our dreams to create their own magic. Ultimately, anything we could dream, they could do. I tried to take some of the really scary stuff that happens in dreams and incorporate it into their magic. For instance, have you ever had a dream where a person you know suddenly turns into someone else? Your mom turns into your teacher. Your best friend turns into your worst enemy. I took that idea and gave my Darklings the ability to shape shift. In fact, their shape shifting abilities are so killer, they can blend into shadows and appear almost invisible. Unfortunately—for the Darklings—they’re not very creative on their own. So, they can only make up things that they’ve already seen, either in real life or in one of our dreams.

I also gave my Darklings some traits from existing legendary creatures. I did this to make them seem more believable and real. Here’s the breakdown:
From vampires: The fact that they need to be invited in to a house before they can harvest; the fact that if they feed on us too long, we will die; the fact that they are drawn to us and need to feed off us.
From doppelgangers: The ability to look exactly like an existing person.
From werewolves: Sorry, can’t tell you that one! It would give away a plot twist in the book.
From shape shifters: The ability to change shape almost instantly, from Darkling to human to animal to tree. No limits in what they could look like, as long as it was something they had already seen.
From Muses: The fact that when they harvest human dreams, the process will give the human the ability to dream more, to be even more creative. This makes the Darkling-human relationship symbiotic, instead of parasitic.

But my all-time favorite Darkling ability originated from the dreamworld, not an ancient myth. Have you ever had one of those dreams where time seems to stand still, where you feel like your dream lasted five years? It’s creepy, isn’t it? You can wake up and feel like you’ve lived another lifetime within an eight hour span. Believe it or not, my Darklings have the power to make time stand still by casting a Veil. They can freeze everything within the Veil—from moving cars to running animals to falling rocks—and make everything hold completely still. Until the Veil breaks.

So, here’s my question for you: If you could make time stand still, what moment would you freeze? Would you use it to prevent a disaster or would you use it to savor a beautiful memory? Also, if you were a Darkling, you would able to walk through the space frozen in time and move things. So if a rock was falling, you could catch it and carry it away. But you would have to be strong enough to carry whatever you move.

So, how would you use the ability to stop time? I’m looking forward to reading all of your answers!

Hi Merrie! Grats on the new release, I’ve got it in my massive TBR pile already. :)

If you could make time stand still, what moment would you freeze? Would you use it to prevent a disaster or would you use it to savor a beautiful memory?

That is a pretty thought provoking question… I think it would be a power I honestly would NOT want to have. It’s too easy to say you’d have changed one disaster in your life and wipe away all the good things that have sprouted out of a bad thing. I think sometimes bad/sad/unpleasant things HAVE to happen to make us grow. Even still I can think of a memory or two I wouldn’t mind reliving.

So, how would you use the ability to stop time?

Ultimately if I could stop time I’d use it to catch up on sleep. :P Or maybe catch up on my TBR pile. Is that utterly selfish? Most definitely but I deserve it. ;) lol

And now for my questions for you…

I love good world building and characters, often find it easy to overlook a weak plot as long as those two items are solid. Since your post here focuses more on the world building I’m curious about the characters… do your characters come to you first or the world you drop them into?

Obviously you had to really put some work into the abilities of your Darklings, I am totally digging what you’ve told us here. When it comes down to actually sitting down to write do you listen to music? Have a playlist for your books or just like it quiet?

Thanks for answering my questions and best wishes for your release!

    • Rhianna,
Catch up on sleep–something I would LOVE to do!

As far as world building and characters, I usually get a character first, but it really varies from one book to the next. Sometimes I get a situation, like the set up for the book, but the story doesn’t come alive and capture my interest until I have a fully developed character set in the midst of the situation.

And yes, I ALWAYS listen to music while I’m writing. I like to listen to soundtracks and they change from scene to scene. A couple of favorites include the soundtracks from Sherlock Holmes and X-Men: First Class. However, I can’t listen to anything when I’m editing.

I’m really glad you have FEAST on your TBR pile and I hope you enjoy it!

    Hi Merrie!

Congratulations on your release of FEAST, can’t wait to read it!

If you could make time stand still, what moment would you freeze? Would you use it to prevent a disaster or would you use it to savor a beautiful memory?
    - I would probably use it to savor a beautiful memory. It would be when I was a lot younger. When I was still living with my whole family, when the time felt happier and simple.

So, how would you use the ability to stop time?
-Definitely to catch up on reading, my TBR list keeps piling up, extend my deadlines for homework/essays in class, and sleep haha.

    Questions for you!
    1. What are you currently working on?
    2. What was the last book that you read?
    3. Are you doing anything fun today to celebrate your book release?

Loved your answer about savoring a memory of when your were younger and your family was all together. I would love to do that too!

      Questions!

      1. What are you currently working on?
Right now I’m trying to finish up all the details for Cursed, the e-book prequel to FEAST.

      2. What was the last book that you read?
The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. It’s fabulous! 5 stars.

      3. Are you doing anything fun today to celebrate your book release?
Yes! I’m going out for dinner (to P.F. Chang’s) and then to a movie with my husband. Yay! Celebration time!!

  4. Bets Davies says:

I love the idea of Darklings feeding off dreams. Mine would give them some crazy-ass powers. Also, I’m generally a lucid dreamer, so would I be aware a Darkling feeding? I’m not sure of how a dream that lasts five days equals being able to stop time. All those people would be living out their different five day or however many hours delusions while you moved through the stopped time? Because people don’t freeze in dreams. They don’t live less, they live more. I guess that would be my fascination. What would everyone believed had happen for so long while I froze them?

All that aside, if I could stop time, I would do one of two things. I would become a kick ass, crazy crime fighter completely with outfit. But with a sense of humor. I would just freeze people and move things all around. Whether I was fighting crime and I needed the criminals to trip over their own feet and deal with a herd of attack raccoons. I might stop an average scene in the park and put the picnic box in the basketball hoop and the basketball in the potato salad and the frisbee in someone’s open mouth.

Looking forward to Feast, but right now I’ve sworn I won’t buy new books till I’ve read some of the ones I’ve stacked up, since I’m short funds. If I won the prize, I would buy your book, but right now I have to be strict with myself.

    • Bets,
Hi! OMG, I have lucid dreams too! They are sooo weird. As far as time stopping in dreams, I don’t know about you, but in my dreams I can never get away from the bad guy. It feels like I’m running but not getting anywhere. Also, dreams seem to skip–they jump from one location to the next, like a piece is missing.

Sounds like you would like to be a nice version of Hit Girl, from Kick Ass! Except you’d like to be able to play pranks too. Fun!

I’m glad you’d like to win FEAST and I hope you win!

    • Hi, Viki!
Stopping time to save people–my favorite answer! I would love to do that too.

My favorite time of day is actually two different times: I love to write in the morning and the evening. The afternoon is just not good for me–I end up being brain dead about 3 p.m.

      =)

  7. Biki says:

If you could make time stand still, what moment would you freeze?
It’s hard to say, I would want to do something alturistic but at the same time, I want to be greedy and use it for myself. Although, knowing myself, I’d freeze time just to finish up projects I said I would finish to match the deadline I gave myself. I feel like a lot of fantastic memories I have I get to watch in some of my dreams. I would like to be able to prevent a disaster and I’d definitely catch the rock–and if it was too big, I’d use the freeze time then to build myself a dolly! haha. Otherwise, I guess it’d be great just to get myself out of some of the troubles I fall into.

Have you seen Inception? I wonder if the idea of living an entire life in a few scant moments blossomed into the movie and when you mentioned it, that’s what I instantly thought of.

Other than writing, what do you like to do in your spare time? Do you have hobbies that you’d like to learn or spend more time on?

    Thanks,

Hi! Great answer about building a dolly to catch the rock!

I have seen Inception! Yes, I think there are probably a large number of stories written about our dreams. It’s something we all do and it’s so mysterious.

What do I do in my spare time? I love to read and hang out with my dogs. I also love getting together with other writers. I’m in two or three writers groups and I have a great time whenever we get together.

        Hi,
I will preorder it as soon as you are there! I have Feast in my cart, but I have to wait until payday.

        Jenn

        • Jennifer Morrell says:

          Hi,
For the question you asked about, what would I do if I could make time stand still, save someone or savor a moment? That is hard. I am 42, and all the things I would change that led to where I am are in the past. If I could stop time and there was someone I could help I would do that.
A twist on your question though. If I could go back and make time stand still at a moment, I would go back to when I was a child. My dad had to have an eye removed because of the war in Vietnam. Now I would not change his military, he would not like that. But when he had the surgery at the VA hospital around 1978, they gave him tainted blood, Hepatitis. From there is was one problem after another with his health. I would stop time and make sure the blood was good. It would be the difference between him still being here with me and where he is now, buried at a military cemetery.
Sorry for the downer, but had to answer that.
          Jenn

          • Jennifer,
Hi, sweetie! And thanks so much for posting what you would do if you could stop time. I don’t think your answer was a downer at all. I think it shows how much you truly loved your father and that’s incredibly beautiful. My father is dead too and I would give almost anything to have him still alive. I miss him so much.

I really appreciate you sharing from your heart.

Hi Merrie! Congrats on your new release :) I should receive my pre-order pretty soon.

If you could make time stand still, what moment would you freeze? Would you use it to prevent a disaster or would you use it to savor a beautiful memory?

I’m actually not really sure what I would do if I could stop time. Preventing a disaster is definitely something I would want to do but, being the person I am, I would not want to stop with just one. For the sake of everyone involved I would probably pick 9/11 as the disaster to avert, although that would probably have just p***ed off someone and made the next target even deadlier. So maybe that’s not the route for me. How about savoring a memory instead! It would have something to do with my Grandmother….she was a dairy farmer until a few years ago and now she lives with my parents (and has Alzheimer’s Disease). I would love to savor the times when I spent weeks there with her every summer; just make time stand still so I didn’t have to leave her to go back home.

Hi! And thanks for the congrats! I hope your book arrives soon. =)

What a wonderful use of stopping time–to spend more time with your grandmother. My mother had Alzheimer’s too, so I really know what you mean. I’d love to capture some of the moments with her and get to relive them.

Does my husband help me plot? (He’s sitting next to me right now and we both laughed a bit.) No. He does tell me what I books I should write, but I only listen to him sometimes. *grin* When it comes to plotting, I usually ask for help from the folks in my writing groups. They’re worth their weight in platinum. I treasure their advice and input.

And then we’d probably both get put behind bars for revealing secrets. I really like how you would use the ability to stop time, though. Thanks for stopping by! I’m so sorry to hear about your father. :( My father died of a heart attack too, when I was 16.

If I could go back in time, who would I want to visit from my family:

Wow. That’s a tough question. It would either be my father–I had no idea I would lose him when I was so young. Or it would be to see my son when he was a little boy–he grew up so fast and I wish I could go back and spend more time with him he was younger again.

Thanks for asking such a thought-provoking question!

Humm, if I could stop time, I’d totally be selfish and use it to give myself a minute before speaking my mind. My mouth often takes off before my brain kicks in so it might have kept me out of hot water when I was younger.

    1. For some reason this popped into my head. If you can be any supernatural creature who would you be and why?
    2. Pie or Cake?

So, here’s my question for you: If you could make time stand still, what moment would you freeze? Would you use it to prevent a disaster or would you use it to savor a beautiful memory?
So, how would you use the ability to stop time? -> mostly I would go back to when my grandmother and grandfather (on my mother’s side) were alive, just to re-cherish those times. Thirteen years later and I still miss my grandmother something fierce. I miss her fire, I miss her generosity, and I miss just knowing that I have someone in my corner to turn to when I feel lost and alone.
There’s a few other moments I would like to go back to change. Nothing big. More like going back to my wedding and keeping grandma’s opals in my ears. My earlobs had been sore (freshly pierced) and I had asked my hubby’s cousin to hold them for me (her mother actually worked with jewelry and had them cleaned for me). Never did get those earrings back and it really ticks me off. My grandmother LOVED opals

    • Raonaid,
Hi! What supernatural creature would I be? I’d like to be a creature who could mend broken hearts.

Pie or Cake? Definitely cake!! Chocolate with lots of frosting. Yum!

It sounds like you had an awesome relationship with your grandmother. What a blessing! Thank you for sharing that–it means a lot to hear about it. :)

Hi Merrie!!! I’ve been thinking all afternoon about what I would do if I could stop time. I was thinking about freezing it on a beautiful summer saturday afternoon, as i float on a raft in the pool. That is just so extremely peaceful. I’d also like to be able to help save animals from getting hit by cars…that’s just so sad.

Hi there! The book sounds really good, I put it in my wish list at amazon, will def be checking it out. I liked the trailer on your website, I was wondering about the darklings. In the trailer, the guy shown, was he a darkling? If they are from another planet, how do they look as themselves? (at birth), I mean, are they humanoid, human, or other and only have taken human shape due to their shape changing abilities? anyway, I really do think this sounds like a great idea!!

What are your thoughts on audiobooks? Do you listen to them? Will yours be available? thanks for being here and congrats on the release!

    • Joani,
Hi! I’m so glad you like the concept for Feast! Yay!

In the trailer, the guy shown, was he a darkling? Yes, that was Ash.

If they are from another planet, how do they look as themselves? They have a humanoid shape but grey skin and wings.

What are your thoughts on audiobooks? Do you listen to them? I personally don’t listen to audiobooks. I happen to be a visual learner, so anything auditory (except for music) is sometimes hard for me to grasp.

Will yours be available? I don’t know. :( That’s up to the publisher. But I hope they will be soon!

      Thanks for the congrats!

    1) If I could make time stand still, the moment I would freeze would be a time when my mom, my son, my boyfriend and I were all together taking in an awesome movie. So, I would be savoring a beautiful memory.
    2) Yes, I’d use the ability to stop time. I haven’t really experienced any disasters, but it would be really handy in case something did come up.
