How to Breathe Fire by Shona Husk

***½

Camea has her future all planned out for her by her intended husband and her parents. Their plan is to marry her off to the farmer’s son next door and join the two farms. But Camea is anxious for any life but that and so she prays that she’s claimed by the lava god as a sacrifice. Of course, Camea intends to escape and run off to faraway lands, but nothing from this point forward goes as planned.

Matai is cursed to collect an annual bride and kill her for the hubris of loving and abandoning a witch, and he won’t let Camea go. She’s fierce, pragmatic, and yet willing to fight or die for what she wants.

How to Breathe Fire is one part cautionary tale, a smidge of myth, a dash of romance, and all heart. Ms. Husk is very talented and this tale reads fast. I’ll be watching for other tales; Husk intrigues me.
