Blood Secrets by Jeannie Holmes
Blood Secrets, the exciting and fast-paced second installment in the terrific Alexandra Sabian series, opens with Alex exercising her newfound talent of sending her consciousness to the Hall of Records (which contains information on every person who has ever lived) on the spiritual plane, looking for more information on her beloved late father. While there, Alex senses someone watching her, but sees no one. After returning to her body, happily ensconced in her hotel room with Varik, her co-worker and former fiancé, Alex gets a big surprise when Varik convinces his boss to allow her, in spite of currently being under investigation, to come along to a crime scene. It seems that the Enforcers may indeed be willing to make use of Alex’s psychic talents, unusual for a vampire, suspension or not. Upon their arrival at the scene, Varik notices right away the similarities to the crimes of The Dollmaker, dating back several decades. Alex experiences a disturbing vision when picking up the doll at the scene.
Meanwhile, LT Tasha Lockwood, liaison between the local police and the vampire-run FBPI (Federal Bureau of Preternatural Investigation), still uncomfortable at having to work so closely with vampires, has additional troubles: her husband wants sole custody of their daughter, a situation certainly not aided by Tasha’s drinking. When she receives a call telling her that if she will only keep an eye on Alex, and steal the journal of the missing girl in the current case, all will go well for her in the custody case, Tasha does not feel as though she has any choice. Alex has her hands full with a serial killer who has been obsessed with her for years, the Special Investigator sent to observe her, and trying to make sense of the new things she learns about her past seemingly every moment.
Holmes masterfully weaves together the various plot threads, resulting in a highly-suspenseful tale that keeps the reader flipping the pages to find out what happens next. With creepy villains and flawed main characters keeping secrets from one another, surprises pop out at every turn. During a conversation in which she attempts to get some information about Varik’s past, Alex tells him, “You keep secrets like some people keep houseplants. Your brain is a greenhouse for lies and half-truths” (144).
One of the most intriguing aspects of this engrossing series remains the vampire mythos that serves as its base and which plays a major role in the events of Blood Secrets: vampires require the sustenance provided by the psychic energy contained in the blood of those they feed from – the blood itself is only the method of delivery. The author scores major points for a gutsy ending that has a major impact on Alex. This reviewer will be impatiently awaiting book three in this excellent series.
