Drake Black, after fulfilling the terms of his last contract, is looking forward to nothing more strenuous than a couple of beers and getting some sleep when his phone goes off, giving him thirty minutes to report to the next job. Starving and exhausted, Drake calls his best friend to bring him pizza and beer, and travels the shadows to get to the meeting place in hopes of having a chance to eat before he gets the specifics of his new contract.

Used to contracts to kill, Drake is stunned when he learns his new job is for an order of protection, watching out for a vampire woman who was exiled from Chicago three years earlier for unauthorized violence. Unable to refuse, Drake reluctantly takes the contract and meets up with the woman, to find that she is not at all what he expected.

Toni Tutoro just wants to come home. Three years of wandering the country after her exile from Chicago has been both physically and emotionally draining, and she hopes that Lord Christian Locke will allow her to return, even after her attack on Stryker in revenge for the slaughter of Toni’s family. Calling in favors from old friends, Toni’s temper flares when Drake makes an unexpected appearance, and though her friends trust him, Toni is still suspicious. After an unplanned meeting with Christian, Toni is hopeful that he will allow her to stay, though she had not counted on Drake’s constant presence, almost overwhelming her with strong feelings of guilt, confusion, and sexual attraction.

Toni was an interesting contradiction: she projected an image of strength while doing her best to hide her inner vulnerabilities, and I enjoyed her temper and her tendency towards sarcasm. Her loyalty to her friends and family was admirable, often ignoring her own safety to defend others. Drake did his best to mask his self-hatred and insecurities with brutality, but he truly longed for a woman who would love him for who he really was.

This fast-paced story was full of romance, drama, fighting, plots, counterplots, and vampires, with an occasional sprinkling of werewolves just to keep things stirred up. I loved the intrigue and excitement, and literally could not put this book down.
