Skin Thief by Sonnet O’Dell
It is a new day and a new start for Cassandra. After struggling to succeed during the day as a college student and survive during the night as a witch in an alternate magical reality, she finally realizes that something has to give and choices have to be made. She cannot change her truth of having to live in two different realities each day, but she can control what she will do in both of them. With that in mind, she withdraws from college in her daytime world, and gets her Paranormal Investigator license in the nighttime world.
Solving mysteries and using her powerful magical gifts meets Cassandra’s financial and emotional needs. Opening her own investigative office and working on retainer with the police department gives her a chance for security while she investigates the mystery of her own existence – including finding out exactly “what” she is. Although told she is human and a witch, both she and her powers are changing and what she might change into is the greatest mystery of all.
For the moment, though, life is good. Her new office open for business, an attentive boyfriend, a too-attentive vampire hoping to be her boyfriend, and a job call out from the police department to investigate a strange occurrence at a local prison are the beginning of her new life. A prison guard attacks an elderly inmate and almost beats him to death, and the beaten inmate swears that HE is the guard. Cassandra, using a seeing spell, is shocked to discover his claims are true. Somehow the inmate has been able to swap souls with the guard. The hunt is on for the skin thief and unfortunately, Cassandra and the police must follow a trail of bodies in the quest to learn not only who, but why (there is also a surprising and heart-breaking twist, but I’m not telling what it is).
Skin Thief is the latest in the Cassandra Farbanks saga that just keeps getting better and better. All the impossibilities of the situation seem absolutely probable and even somewhat mundane. Her acceptance of living in dual realities and making accommodations for both shows a resilience of spirit and downright stubbornness that is Cassandra Farbanks. Her faults are as endearing as her virtues. She is a young woman struggling alone in not one, but two, worlds and not willing to give quarter to either. Each struggle, each blow, each triumph becomes another weapon of strength in her arsenal. The answers she gets about her own being just lead to more perplexing questions. Skin Thief is a smart and clever read, and best of all, absolutely enthralling!
