Opal, a young student mage, was well pleased with her progress on her assigned project, while Karn, the warrior she had been assigned, lay unconscious nearby. A surprise attack by an elven man drew Opal’s attention, forcing her to defend herself by using her magic to not only create a portal but also to snap it shut on the elf, efficiently removing his sword arm and causing the rest of his body to collapse in front of her. Knowing that this was merely the beginning of a long and difficult war, Opal was determined to maintain focus and continue towards her goal of becoming a member of the High Council.

Karn, a proud and noble warrior from Weiden’s Rise, found Opal to be a useful companion, given her healing skills and ability to observe more than was visible. As a strong and courageous leader, Karn’s planning and military strategies gained him great favor, and his tactics were legendary. As Opal gently guided his memories, Karn became enraged at the destruction and agreed to join Opal in her travels to find her instructors from the High Council. Unfortunately, Karn was being led down a treacherous path, and many lives would be lost before the truth was discovered.

Soul Born is a fascinating chronicle of the battle between good and evil, the forces of nature pitted against the corruptive elements of excessive power. I enjoyed seeing Opal’s character evolve, though the changes were not what I had originally expected. Karn’s loyalty to the battle and his strength of character remain unchanged even after he discovers the truth about his origins, and with the help of Tala, an elven woman, he begins to become the man he was destined to be. I loved the clear descriptions and was captivated by the storyline and am interested in learning what’s next for these characters.
